Has anyone gotten a NROTC scholarship lately?

I believe that the medical issues come after the scholarship has been awarded. My son received his scholarship, then we went for the eye appointment and the physical. He had a "remedial" on his physical for which we had to visit another specialist. The process took a little less than 1 month to resolve. However, his status on the NROTC website still listed him as a scholarship recipient. I do agree that timing is a factor. I was at Notre Dame in August with my daughter for freshman orientation where I met a retired Navy Captain with twin daughters there on Navy ROTC scholarships. I asked him about the process and he told me to get everything done as early as possible, that ND's slots filled up quickly. Early for him meant August, but we didn't get my son's application done completely until October. Apparently that was still fine, but I would go with his definition of early and for future applicants get their entire packages in by the end of summer prior to their senior year, if possible.

Medical issues come after the NROTC scholarship has been awareded IF the applicant has not also applied for USNA (don't know about the other SA's handle it).

Because our son was also applying for USNA, he was set up for his DODMERB exam and fitness assessment in the summer before his senior year began, as soon as his Academy application was complete which was June of his junior year, and that got the ball rolling. Talk about early, he applied for USNA Summer Seminar within 20 minutes of the application be available on line (winter of junior year), and he still did not get selected -- that was a bummer.

He completed his NROTC application in July, well before the first Board. Fitness assessment was in August.

There are so many variables here and each path is different, but I do believe early timing is VERY important in this process.

I totally agree about the timing Cronusmom! I would love to be a fly on the wall and see how these boards function. Until reading these forums I had no idea the branches of service conducted things so differently. My son only applied for an NROTC scholarship, so I didn't even realize that there were different levels of AFROTC scholarships or how AROTC conducted their boards, let alone the process for applying to a service academy. I just wonder if once a complete application is in, does it go before every board conducted until a "Congratulations" or "Sorry to inform you" note is sent? The process is a mystery, and I wonder if board members get a laugh out of our speculation! It's probably really straightforward!

I just got a laugh myself -- never though about them laughing at US -- haha!

Our son is Navy all the way -- USNA and NROTC only. We spent a lot of time discussing applying for other ROTC scholarships and service academies, but he came up with darn good reasons why each of those was not the right fit for him, and his reasons made perfect sense to us (and the B&G officer) at the time, although I cannot recall what they were at this point.

We never knew all the ins and outs of the process either and only learned as we went. We are not a military family, so our son teaches us. Beside getting the tip to apply early, we really had no clue what we were doing, and once I found the SA forum and College Confidential, WOW, we learned so much more!!!!!!

As far as NROTC, it was explained to us (by the B&G officer for the USNA that came to visit us in May of son's junior year) that applying VERY early was the best strategy. NROTC Board reviews begins in August, and if you are not selected at the first board, your file is put in the pile for the next, and the next, and the next, until the maximum number of scholarships are awarded for that year. So, one can see why only having your file viewed once or twice because of late application would be a disadvantage.

Is our son an academic God? Nope. Is our son an athletic God? Nope. He's very bright, very well rounded, and he submitted his NROTC application in July. We are so thankful he was selected early.

Here are my stats. I was not selected for a scholarship. Make what you want out of it.
1200 SAT, 3.7 GPA, 4.5 HPA, honors and AP classes, top 20 percent out of a 700 graduating class, recreational and school sports, captain of volleyball team, working 2 part time jobs, over 400 hours of community service with an animal shelter.

I was also told by my recruiter that the navy was looking to diversify and might have a better chance of getting accepted if I put another race besides white, which I would not do, and I hope that, that is not the reason I was not selected.

Kelly,

My son is in the same situation. His recruiter told him that he probably wouldn't receive a scholarship because he was white. My son informed him that he is also American Indian and Pacific Islander. The recruiter said that might help, but don't be surprised if you don't receive a scholarship.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I'm fed up with everything being based on diversity. I feel the ones who are truly qualified should reap the rewards. I don't care what color, race, or religion you are, as long as, you are the most qualified. I know I won't make friends with this statement, but I truly believe we are creating a bigger division when we make choices based on diversity, rather then quality. I want my sons to be chosen because of their hard work, but if someone has done more, then by rights they should be chosen before my sons.

Good Luck to you and everything will work out.

I spoke with a Lt in Pensacola yesterday. He told me because of the huge increase (about 2000) more applicants this year than last and less scholarships available there would be 2 boards held in April instead of the one normally held. He also said this was the 1st time that letters were sent out early to applicants who were not selected. Guess this confirms the difficulty this year gaining a "regular" NROTC scholarship.

Sorry if this question has been asked, but does everyone get an ROTC scholarship denial letter if not selected? Just wondering since my daughter hasn't received anything in the mail, and her status still says "processing" on the navy status page, so we are thinking she is still in the running for an NROTC nursing scholarship. Thanks.

Yes, according to the Lt everyone will get a letter if not selected but he did say none would go out until all the final decisions are made.

So has anyone found out the mystery behind the disappearing test scores on the status page?

Disappearing Test Scores?

My son's test scores never appeared at the Marine NROTC website.... Only that his application is being reviewed by the Marine Corps Board.

Anyone hear about the most recent boards? It seems awfully quiet.

Boards are very quiet on all fronts, SA's and ROTC's appointment/scholarship awards and/or rejections.

Well I just found out I didn't recieve the scholarship from my online status. I'm still wating to hear from the Coast Guard Academy so hopefully there'll be better news there. I have to say despite the fact that my recruiter said I was a "shoe in," it looks like this year was extremely competetive, and I read about many kids getting accepted to service academies but rejected from ROTC, so mabe there's still hope. Anyway I have some fine back up colleges in place in case the whole military pathway doesn't work out. Best of luck to those still waiting, and congrats to those who are accepted.

Sorry to hear that ! Good luck with the CGA. I am waiting to hear back from them also. I am a freshman in college so this is my second time around so the waiting is killing me.

Yeah I know what you mean. Just out of curiousity, did you apply your senior year in high school too, and if so could you post some of your stats from last year. I noticed your an Eagle Scout, which I am too, and am hoping that gives me a little extra boost over the edge.

WHen you say second time around...what do you mean? My son will be a freshman in the fall and we just found out today that he didn't get the NROTC scholarship. I heard he can reapply for the 4 yr in July/Aug and it would apply to his sophomore year. Is that what you are doing? Or are you applying for a 3 yr scholarship? Now that we know he didn't get the scholarship, we have to see what his next best option is...try for 4 yr again or try for a 3 yr (I heard is non-existent).

I applied for CGA last year and didnt get an appointment so I went to Temple University. I decide to join the unit here which is based out of UPenn. I can apply for the 4-year scholarship because I have less than 30 credits by the time I finished my application. While I was waiting though I started taking my naval science classes so I actually got to know a bunch of the people from the unit and build up a report with the teachers and cadre so that I will have a better chance of getting a campus based scholarship if the need should arrive.
