Has anyone gotten a NROTC scholarship lately?

NROTC scholarship status

I finally called my son's regional coordinator regarding the status of his scholarship (I know, he should have called himself but was in school/work til 5 p.m.) and was advised that Boards have not met since December and that no decisions have been made since then. Does that sound right to anyone? As with many of you, I can no longer stand the wait! This is cruel and unsual! Or is this whole college admissions process just plain old cruel and unusual punishment (just kidding)?

I called Pensacola yesterday, also, to see what is going on. I was told that my son's packet will not get reviewed until the last board, which is near the end of April, so we will not know anything until then  I was advised to keep an eye on the web for his status change. This jives with another post I read somewhere on this forum that there would be two boards in April.

I also asked about availability of slots at the schools on son's list; VA-Tech and Penn State are full, and VMI has a few slots left (still need to check on other schools.) Since all schools have May 1st acceptance deadlines, I was also advised to begin making phone calls to ask for extensions, since we'll have virtually no time to make a decision! With my son's situation, getting or not getting a scholarship will play a big factor in deciding where he is going.

I agree with all of you, this waiting and waiting is really getting to me (son actually seems to be taking it much better than me )

DMK - did Pensacola say if Tech had a waiting list? Son received scholarship to VMI (2nd choice) yesterday, but VT is his first choice and I'm going to call today to see if he can get on the waiting list for Tech.

Sorry, no mention of waiting lists was made to me; I was only advised that if son received a scholarship for a school that was already filled, we would need to contact that school's unit directly to see about a transfer.

Yeah I know what you mean. Just out of curiousity, did you apply your senior year in high school too, and if so could you post some of your stats from last year. I noticed your an Eagle Scout, which I am too, and am hoping that gives me a little extra boost over the edge.

I sent you a PM.

:confused:I called Tech yesterday and they told me I had to talk to Pensacola. I'll post what I find out today in case anyone else is in a similar situation.

They are probably waiting to see who gets in to which school. April 1st is ther decision date for the majority of schools.

nrotc still waiting

still waiting here Kelly as well. I called the CO Monday and he said the boards haven't met since Dec. He said this is highly unusual.

Scholarship denied :frown:

But I've already accepted an appointment to West Point so at this point it took the weight off my shoulders. Was more surprised than disappointed - my NROTC admissions officer at the school I applied to strongly believed that I would get it.

Best of luck to everyone waiting!

As stated numerous time during this cycle, things just aren't making much sense this year.
Case in point, one of my candidates with a 700M, 780V, in the top 5 of class, varsity athlete, multiple hs clubs and volunteer service, major leadership roles, etc. declaring MechE at very competitive universities (received offers from all) just found out that they were not selected for a NROTC scholarship. That was a very difficult discussion to have, what can you say? Luckily they are still in the running for USNA.
Truthfully, an unbelievable year seeing as candidates with much lower stats, etc. have been offered 4 yr scholarships. Never know what the board's thought process is of selecting officers for FY 2014

Actually the national date for officially notifying a college or university of your decision is 01 May :thumb:

I was turned down for a NROTC Scholarship this week as well. However, I do have an appointment to USAFA and an AFROTC Scholarship to go with! Best of luck to those waiting!

Can I draw any comfort from the fact that my son is still "In process"?

BTW-Emailed Lt. Connor, in Pensacola, and she said boards will continue until the end of April.

nrotc programs that may be filled at certain colleges

The best way to determine whether the slots are filled is to call the NROTC C.O. at each college on your son's/daughter's list and ask them. I was told by two schools on my sons's lists still have openings. He was accepted at three NROTC schools (and rejected at 2 of them). I just know how i can wait until May to make a decision. Due to lack of funds, we haven't even visited the two schools. He just wants NROTC so badly (his dad is a career Naval officer (USNA) (not getting any help on this from him) and I was kind of hoping that might help but I am hearing it doesn't.) Anyone have any inspiring news yet?

Frustrated but Hopeful

If I see that "no decision has been made on your application" one more time, I'm gonna spit! (laugh) Give us a YES or even a NO.....give us something to work with. May 1st deadline is coming and fast.

Just heard 3 days ago- received NROTC scholarship to the school DD was NOT accepted to. Go Figure! Now trying to transfer the scholarship to the school she WAS accepted to- only prob is that their unit is full. I guess it's time to say "no thanks" and go with the back-up plan.

Nursemom,
How did DD find out about the scholarship? Was it through the status web page? letter? phone call? Still a no decision today. Just curious. First choice school won't hold spot at University after May 1st, however second choice still has openings.

Is it over?

Hey all,
Thanks for all your comments on this post.
Maybe someone can give me a little hope?

My son's online status still says that his NROTC scholarship app is complete and
"No decision has been made on your application."

Is there any chance that he still is in the running for a scholarship?
I hope so.
Thanks.

Seamus170,

We were in the same boat, hoping that "no change" to the NROTC status page meant DS was still in the running.

However, just checked, and we finally have an answer: NROTC website status now says "We are sorry, you were not selected for a scholarship. You will receive a letter explaining other options available to you." :frown:

This was first choice for my son, as his mother was a Navy corpsman & later became a nurse, he felt good about following in her footsteps. So it will be a blow to him, but I hope I can help him understand that there was a significant upsurge in candidates as well as a drop in the number of available slots, so you have to expect that some very good candidates will be "on the bubble" - and not make it. At least he got this far along in the process, it says he was in the running all the way until the last round. The Boards had tough choices to make, and I applaud those who were selected. :thumb:

And hope for him still lingers - there's still AROTC yet to go (status unchanged there). DS called the PMS and / or ROO for all his schools last week, and several were very encouraging that he was a strong candidate for their program - a couple even expressed a desire to talk to him about campus-based scholarships should the National Board not select him. We'll see...

Anyone else out there getting any movement on their NROTC (or AROTC) status? And does anyone know, does the AROTC just give you ONE option about school initially, or some to choose from?

Thanks, and again congrats to all those who were selected this year.:thumb::thumb:

I got the same as you. I don't understand why though, but whatever, ill be doing ROTC no matter what.
