Have any sergeants attended the Air Force academy?

I was doing the math and although highly unlikely, it could happen if the age is right starting enlisted career. I'm sure it's more likely for SrA with a line number for staff to attend the academy. Anyone have knowledge of any staffs that have attended? (I just thought it would be interesting that someone could have this amazing opportunity, experience both airman tier and NCO tier)

Ssgt would be quite difficult. Even if a person came into the Air Force as A1C, "2 stripes", by the time they made SRA and then eligible to test for ssgt, and sew it on...... you'd be looking at 3-4 years in minimum and probably 21-22 years old. It would be difficult.

But, fwiw, I have known a number of people who came in as an officer, didn't get promoted above the rank of captain, and was given the choice of getting out or becoming enlisted at the rank of SSgt. They had 10 years as an officer, so when they retired, they still got retirement pay as a captain. And I've known plenty of enlisted airmen and ssgt who finished their degree, got accepted for a commission, and became officers. But going from ssgt to the academy is possible, but very unlikely.

Thanks for the ending, that's probably more realistic. Do you know if the same would be true for major or can you generally retire as a major?

I was thinking with 6 year contract, btz winner, and a very good score for staff, they might have a line number high enough to become it for a couple months before going to the academy assuming they entered at the age of 22. I agree, super hard and very unlikely to do just wonder if it worked out for anybody in the past.

In the upcoming class of 2021 there are a couple (two I believe) SrA with line numbers for staff that will be attending. They would have had SSgt if they had not attended the prep school and waited a year to apply.
