My son was awarded a 3-year army ROTC scholarship. He just found out that he was medically disqualified for headaches. However his medical records show that his migraines are resolved and he's not on any medication and only indicated on his paperwork that he has one regular headache a year for the past 2 years which is treated by over the counter ibuprofen. He's very confused why this would medically disqualify him. What do you suggest that he gets from his doctor to help in the waiver process?

It is important to understand exactly how the system works. When the candidate fills out the questionnaire, the answers go to DoDMERB who either qualifies or disqualifies the candidate based on military medical standards. If a candidate gets a disqualification, that is then passed to the commissioning authority who then decides to pursue a waiver or not. If the waiver is requested, then they will review his medical records and possibly ask for more information.

At this point he was told since he was awarded a national ROTC scholarship that he was automatically being considered for a waiver. He has not been asked for any additional information but told he could upload a letter from his doctor. He is in the process of getting that letter. He gave his doctor the information from the DODi 6130.03 to help her in writing the letter so that she could use military language. The headache/ migraine issue is listed on his medical records as resolved too. Any other advice is helpful.

We are also waiting on a waiver for AROTC due to previous headaches. I believe the DQ is very cut & dry- if you have any of the things they question you about, you are DQ'ed and then asked for AMI. 2 things were cleared up immediately with AMI but the headaches caused a DQ and sent for a waiver. Hopefully we hear soon.

All these things are good to do! How long has it been since his portal said he was DQ'd? If you don't already have his past records regarding the Migraines on hand I would be sure you/he requests those from the medical records department of his Physician's office, so if/when they do ask for AMI he'll be able to submit right away.

My daughter's waiver was just granted today in DODMERB. Initial DQ was 4/23, Waiver granted 5/22.
What was the original disqualifying medical condition? My son is waiting on a waiver for his four year army rotc scholarship. He had childhood Asthma that is no longer an issue and has some knee and hip issues during cross country season that have healed. He was DQed 4/13

Requested AMI for all pharmacy records as well as any dx of asthma or use of inhalers after the age of 12. These were both cleared up by sending the records and a letter from dr stating she never used an inhaler after the age of 8.

Also, D211.40 - History of headaches within the past 24 months- this resulted in a DQ- with a waiver review initiated. We submitted letters from her neurologist as well as her pediatrician. After 5 weeks it went from Waiver request under review to waiver request sent to dodmerb and then waiver granted. She doesn't take any meds for headaches- had a concussion in 7th grade followed by headaches.

Son with occasional previous use of inhaler after age 13, but not for over 4 years now. It was 5 weeks for him to be cleared once he sent in all AMI and Remedials to DodMerb. He was sent for Pulmonary Function Test with Bronchodilator Challenge which was normal, consult with Pulmonologist and was asked for any records regarding Asthma. He was never diagnosed with Asthma, so Doctor wrote a letter clarifying that.

Just to be clear are we talking about more debilitating and limiting headaches/migraines, or just mild headaches(like maybe once a month)?

Hi. So your DS got a Waiver Granted after all the AMIs and Remedials were submitted? My DS still got Waiver Denied for AFROTC even though we went to private allergist Dr and he cleared him with ingestion test for peanut and passed PFT. Trying to contact someone at AFROTC WA to elevate waiver denial and have been running into brick wall.

Yes that's correct. Each situation is different so it's hard to compare. I do know my son was specifically asked to see a Pulmonologist, and was asked for a specific PFT with bronchodilator challenge. I have also heard Army is more liberal with their waivers because their needs are great at this time. Air Force can be tricky to get waiver from. Is there someone at his detachment that can assist with the process to elevate the waiver denial? I don't know anything about the appeal process. He could also consider Army if he really wants to serve and is open to other branches.

She suffered a concussion in 7th grade and headaches followed for several years- doctor described as migraines. She took medicine for a bit but didn't feel it helped so stopped the meds. She limited caffeine, worked out more and gets adequate sleep. Maintained a high gpa through high school while dual enrolled & played 3 sports. Headaches never limited her in any way and have become less and less over the years.

Ok, I never had any kind of injury. I think it's might be genetics for me, but I have also never been really limited and they have been going away. For me, I think I mostly just need to drink more water.

We sent a letter from her neurologist explaining that her headaches do not limit her & have reduced in nature. She also no longer takes medicine for them.
