Health Care Letter

Although I am a parent of a USCGA Class of 2015 who is covered by Tricare..., what ever happened to the President's statement, "If you like the healthcare you have now...you can keep it".. Sounds like KP either didn't like the health care that they had or someone at the WH has pulled a fast on the academy. BTW I haven't cancelled my DS's health policy with my job!! Who knows what will happen next!!

KP is not a "military" academy covered by Tricare. That was established by many others in previous posts on this thread. I think you will be OK at USCGA with your son's heath insurance. But do not cancel his health policy with your job because you never know if you will be able to get the insurance back if needed.

USMMA never really had any true "health insurance" from what I have concluded, despite the anecdotal reports of coverage and what some have said they were told at Indoc, over the years. Appears that the Mids have been covered by sickness/accident policies, and/or some type of arrangement with North Shore Jewish for reimbursement for expenses when a Mid was sent there, or to one of their doctors, at the direction of the Chief Medical Officer at Patten. This would explain all the "lapses" or "loopholes" in coverage many expressed when away from campus.

On October 1st, 2012, that arrangement will change for the first time. All Mids will need primary insurance and will no longer be able to rely on a blanket sickness/accident policy (with lots of exceptions) covering all, or some agreement between Patten and North Shore Jewish.

This is what I have learned about the new heath plan from United Heathcare that will offered to all Mids next month, effective 10/1. This health policy will be mandatory unless you opt out with other comparable or better health insurance coverage.
