Height and weight requirements

Every one has a different frame. Some are big boned others not. The wrist measure give us the frame. For example both girls are 5'7". Maximum weight for a 6" wrist is 164 lbs. For a 7" wrist the maximum is 179 lbs. Big difference.

The PFE at the academy is more stringent than the PFE in the fleet. DS tells me the cited MAW is not applicable at the academy.

Got info from here: US Coast Guard Information. Maximum Allowable Weight.

This reference is NOT correct. For current information regarding Coast Guard weight and body fat standards, including taping instructions, refer to this document: https://www.uscg.mil/directives/cim/1000-1999/CIM_1020_8H.pdf

Regarding the PFE, every swab takes the PFE during swab summer, and every semester as a cadet. There are minimum scores that must be attained. The PFE requirement is more lax in the fleet and is at the discretion of the unit.

I've always wondered how this works for the football players that have to big. Obviously, a 300 pound lineman has to make tape and weight by graduation (with accommodation), but is there a formal waiver process for them?

I can appreciate no waivers. Does that mean the Academy Football team has small players? No one over say 210 pounds? Does not make sense with reality.

That is reality. They are not there to play football. They are there to become USCG Officers. Football is part of their training, not the reason they are there.

A applicant may have a weaker academic record. But is they are recruited athlete, that is okay. If not a recruited athlete, most likely rejected.

I have watched PT at USCGA, Some of the kids lagged far behind in the runs, obviously over the weight standards. Appearance of the young ladies did not suggest low body fat. I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt they ever made the minimum standards. Still, I'd bet my bottom dollar that they graduated and we're commissioned.

That's enough. Please.

Don't read it if you don't like it.

They have to obtain the required score of 200 on the PFE in order to graduate and commission. Cadets who cannot meet this are put on PE programs designed to help them achieve it. Per the PFE manual, cadets who cannot achieve a 165 by the end of their first semester are generally recommended for disenrollment. So, yes, it is possible to see individuals who do not appear to be making the standards, but it is not true that they will be allowed to finish.

I was told be cadre at last summer swab summer a boy could not do 3 push ups. I he lied on the PFE. Cadre was shocked he was not sent home. Some thing is wrong.

What happened to Honor!

I hope you understand that the PFE is composed of three sections. There is no minimum required score for any section. The PFE score is the total of all three. It would be possible to score a 200 without doing any push-ups. So it would be prudent to not jump to any conclusions, particularly if your cited evidence is third-hand. What is perhaps more alarming for this country is the fact that people apparently struggle to meet the 130 and 165 point requirements.

I was recently at an event at Naval Station Great Lakes and an officer from command told me that "Sadly only two out of ten youth are fit for military service". This is of course due to a variety of reasons one of them being physically not qualified.

Yes it is alarming that American youth are so physically unfit.

USCGMaster it sounds as though you are worried about your DD making weight. What I would do if my DD was in the same predicament I would have started her last summer on a weight management and strength class. A personal trainer to supervise, what 10 pounds? This would be smart money to spend right now. It is not too late to do it (4 1/2 mos) and it will help her maintain those standards when she won't have you around at the academy. Did you see that reference ???
