My son is very interested in the Navy. He just transferred schools so that he could join the NJROTC. He is hoping to get into the US Naval Academy. He is a junior in high school.

I am very supportive of the military but also very nervous about this career choice for my son.

What is the first step we need to take towards getting an appointment to the USNA?

First, welcome to the board. You will find tons of information around here regarding all of the Academies. I highly recommend your son look at all of them even if USNA is his first choice.

The best place to start is really at the USNA Admissions page:

http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/

There are three steps that have to be met, each with their own "sets of rules" (in no particular order)
1)A Nomination (usually from a Congressman/Senator)
2)Medically Qualified (the infamous DODMERB)
3)Academically Qualified

Take a read on the various boards, peruse the Admissions page and come back often when you have questions!

Apply for summer seminar if its not too late. I think its still open not sure though!
