My son is a Plebe...Go 2014 !!! Can someone explain what the term Hello Night means ???

I THINK they are referring to the first night that the non-detailer upperclass are allowed to yell at -- oops, I mean, talk to -- the plebes. IOW, "Hello" to the plebes. It was lots of yelling. It's not that hard.

it used to be called Hell night, before that became not quite appropriate to say.....its now hell 0 night.....the night the firsties arrive to say their "hellos" to their new plebes.....they will be putting their plebes through their paces with rack races, lots of reciting rates and menus.......thinking there are many plebes right nowwith sheets off their beds trying to remember what breakfast is for tomorrow......

In our day, "Hell Night" was the night at the end of PPW. I remember it vividly b/c it occurred on my birthday . . . However, it's been a few years and I'm sure the terminology has changed.

Funny in a ridiculous sort of way...Let's just call it what it is. Or maybe it goes this way: "Oh, Hello, so nice to meet you. How was the summer? Oh, it was terribly hot wasn't it? I hope you didn't have too much difficulty with the training. Shall we have tea?"

Old Ranger, did your son go to NASS? They did a mock Hell(o) Night there. My son described it this way... Plebes stand at attention in a dark hall (P-way?) for what seems like an eternity. Then they begin to hear footsteps and whispers behind them, which lasts for another eternity. Suddenly all the lights come on and the yelling starts. The upperclassmen get in their faces and start asking them to repeat their rates, etc. That was his NASS experience, but it is probably different for each company. DS thought it was fun at NASS, but during PPW he told us he wasn't so sure it would be quite as fun in reality!:yllol:

I did something like 150 pushups on my whites on hello night ...haha. Fun night.

My 3/C mid said it was fun last yr........ Not some awful hazing thing.

No DS did not do NASS .... the only experience he had was the summer camp after his junior year of HS. It does not sound any worse then they had it in Plebe summer.

Somehow, I absolutely believe that, what used to be hellish, is now actually fun ...

The new Naval Academy - much more kinder and gentler.

For me/classmates, we dressed in PTs, made sure our socks were motivated and waited for upperclass in the P-way: "PLEBES! HIT THE BULKHEAD!" We dashed out our doors, squared our corners, hit the bulkheads and reported. There was much shouting and a recording of mortars and gunfire on a boombox (hey, I told you it was a while ago). Then rack and uniform races followed. At some point my classmates and I sort of realized, hey, we've done this before, this ain't so bad.

It was not too much later than that, then the 3/c squad leaders introduced themselves and the 2/c turned on the lights and rolled containers of ice cream on desk chairs down the Pway. This sounds utterly absurd, I realize, but I was standing there in parade dress uni, sweating like Muhammad Ali, and I thought, "Damn. I can do this."
