I'm currently in the process of beginning to write my essays for nomination applications. Are there any specific things I should/shouldn't mention in my essays? I'll also take any other advice anyone has to offer about essays and nomination applications in general.

Essays are a very personal endeavor, based on your own thoughts and experiences. So very hard to give blanket advice, except this:

First, work hard to distinguish yourself from other candidates. If someone reads your essay and can easily replace your name with another person’s, you have work to do.

Second, have someone who knows you well (parent, teacher, friend) read your essay. If the BS meter starts going off in their head, or they say you don’t sound like yourself, you have work to do.

Finally, answer the prompts. No. 1 way to fail on the essay is to not answer as you’re asked.

Howdy. The topic of essays, nomination packages and application tips has been addressed in many different ways at this site. Take time and cull through the threads on this forum. There is a lot of information to be gleaned. Include USAFA and USMA in your search because they will also provide additional insight to your queries. You’ve got to do some digging. Go get ‘em Tiger!
