Help Requesting Oral Challenge

I was recently disqualified from AFROTC for having a history of mental illness. I was reevaluated by a psychiatrist and they were able to write a review for me stating that I was probably misdiagnosed with mental illness or that they "could see no reason for being diagnosed with mental illness". I decided I am going to try Army ROTC instead because everyone is saying that their DODMERB is easier but I still need a waiver to continue in that program. I read that some people have made oral challenges to their disqualifications and I would like to do the same for my case. Is an oral challenge like a courtroom-style thing where I can talk to the waiver authority in person? Who would be the POC for requesting the challenge?

I am slightly confused about how the Army ROTC DODMERB works. Is it a completely different waiver authority that looks through my case?

Thank you for taking the time to read. I appreciate any help or advice you can offer about my situation.

DODMERB is the medical clearing house for all SA/ROTC programs. Your exam, and DQ, is what it is from DODMERB. Each program will use the same DODMERB exam.

Each waiver authority is independent of the other. AFROTC will make their own decision about a waiver. AROTC will make their own decision (could be the same, or not) about pursuing a waiver.

Suggest going to DODMERB primary source for your information, vs ‘I’ve heard’ and ‘everyone said’. I’m not DODMERB, but I’ve never hear of an ‘oral challenge’ to challenge a DODMERB decision.

Work your way through the DoDMERB home page left-side menu, including contacts, to better understand the process. No login required.

Could you possibly be conflating the medical process known as an “oral challenge” administered by an allergist for people with food allergy DQs, who use a successful result in an oral challenge as AMI (additional medical information) to support a waiver of the food allergy? See:

DodMerb will need to send your information to the AROTC waiver authority. Not sure the process to get it over to them via DodMerb since you were only pursuing AFROTC, but your Dodmerb tech may be able to assist you, email them. You also may find some guidance from the ROO at your AROTC school of choice, might be worth contacting them. I’ve been told Army Cadet Command will need to know it’s coming, otherwise it could sit for a while before it’s looked at. Mental Health waivers require a few more people to sign off on them I believe so get started as soon as you can with AROTC.
