Hello All,

I want to major in some sort of economics. On the NROTC Website it says that Economics is a tier 3 major and that Quantitative Economics is tier 2. I am hoping to take Quantitative Economics in that case. However, the 5 schools I’m applying to for NROTC don’t explicitly have an option for Quant Econ when applying through common app.

Do I need to contact each school’s NROTC Coordinator separately to find out if the course is available, or should I contact my regional coordinator? I just want to make sure I will qualify for the scholarship with a tier 2 major.

Also, If I apply Early Decision to my NROTC #1 and get in but the scholarship is awarded to another school, how do I handle that?

Thank you for your feedback!

If you want to see if the schools you applied to have that major, then check out their actual website. Some college websites also have a link to their respective rotc units’ web page with the information contained therein. There may be a list of acceptable nrotc majors and their tiers for the specific school. In my opinion you should do the leg work on your own, first. Once you have been awarded a scholarship, that would be the time to look into acceptable majors for your tier at the schools and reach out to the unit if necessary. If your scholarship is awarded to one school, and if you either don’t get into the school you want, or get accepted elsewhere, then you fill out an application to have the scholarship transferred to the school you are accepted into. There are lots of posts about that if you dig. Caveat on changing the school where you want to use the scholarship- if that school is a popular unit, there may already be stiff competition to apply that scholarship there. You can also change your major after scholarship has been awarded, albeit the change is 100% likely if it is in same Tier 2 that you applied. If tier 3, your chances decrease dramatically. Best of luck!
Lastly, if you want to take Quantitative economics in my opinion, you may need to re-prioritize your school selections and add one that actually has that major or another in the tier 2 category that suits you.
