Hello everyone!

I’m planning to apply to a military academy and am looking for advice on how to prepare. Right now, I’m focusing on (select an academy: West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, etc.) and would like to get recommendations from those who have already gone through this process.

Here are a few questions I’m interested in:

What’s the best way to prepare for the entrance exams? Are there any specific books or courses?

Which admission criteria are most important (e.g., leadership skills, athletic achievements, academic performance)?

What was your experience with the interview process and recommendation letters?

What would you recommend for successfully preparing for the physical portion of the entrance exams?

I would appreciate any insights and advice!

Thanks in advance!

There's typically no single admissions test. It varies by academy, but they mostly just assemble your academic record, your extra-curriculars and your other leadership roles along with letters of recommendation and interviews and make some choices. Read up at the various sites (there are five, don't forget about USCGA and USMMA) and the various ROTC paths as well. In fact read up on the various services too since they can provide radically different experiences and are not at all interchangeable. It's a big question that takes some serious digging to find the way that works for you.

Thoughtful questions. And big ones.

First step, the SA is a way station enroute to 5+ years of service on active duty as an officer. Focus on the service and officer specialty areas in your research. What interests you? What do you see yourself doing? Reverse engineer.

Many candidates apply to all 5 federal or more than one SA, plus alternate paths such as college ROTC scholarships. Having alternate plans is key.

Second step, do your research at primary sources. Read every page, link and drop-down menu item at SA websites. You will find many answers there, plus action items and cycle due dates. Research your 2 U.S. Senators and U.S. District Representative websites for their SA nominations area. If they have SA info sessions scheduled, go! Note their nom application requirements and timelines.

When you do that research on your own at a primary SA website, you will find things such as, for example, at USNA.edu:

Desired Courses

Class Data

Teacher Evals (usually an online form for specific course teachers. They fill out an
with form with perhaps some free space for additional comments.

Guidance Counselor/School Official: Info sent with transcripts

The CFA physical fitness test - there are many videos on YT. Look for Stew Smith’s YT channel and website. He is a former Navy SEAL, USNA grad and now a fitness professional. He offers CFA prep advice.

Entrance exams? Not sure what you are referring to. It’s usually your high school GPA, class standing and SAT or ACT scores, plus courses you have taken that they are looking for. The specifics are laid out in the application steps area at each SA website. Generally, take the hardest courses your school offers and cover your STEM bases plus other desired non-STEM courses.

When you mentioned entrance exams, I wondered if you are an international student. That’s not something done for U.S. colleges and universities. I see you are in France. Are you a U.S. citizen? Then you apply the same as any U.S. citizen. You might run into difficulty with your nominations if your parents aren’t citizens or don’t maintain a legal voting residence of record in the U.S. We can talk about that if you are a citizen.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, you have to apply via your own government (usually MOD) and the U.S. Embassy. The U.S. has agreements with certain allies and partners to allow foreign nationals to attend U.S. federal academies. The application process is different. No nominations are required. The foreign national student attends, earns a degree and is commissioned in his or her home country’s armed forces or otherwise completes a service obligation. Many countries require the student to apply and attend one of their own country’s service academies first for a year or more, before applying for a U.S. service academy.

Which are you? That will help us tailor advice.

I would consider applying for Summer Seminar to academies of interest if you're able to. For the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), preparation months ahead of time is the best path for success.
