here is a GOOD question

but the other academies know that academies give out waitlist offers late.

say someone really wants to go to USCGA but is waitlisted but accepted to USMMA..they know that USCGA will be giving out appointments after May 1 because they do it too and that many kids who apply to USMMA apply to USCGA..and they cannot expect a kid to NOT accept SOME college by May 1..that would be putting their future at risk..therefore they shouldn't be too shocked to learn that a kid is turning down one academy to go to another after May 1

I don't think "shock" is the point. If you know where you are going to accept, let everyone else know.

My son is "Wait Listed" at the Coast Guard Academy. One of the first things he did after he got the letter from the USCGA was to notify the Citadel (his second choice) that he is wait listed at the USCGA and that the USCGA is his first choice. His reasoning was that CItadel might also have a wait list and they should know how to handle a candidate that is wait listed at his first choice. I think he is right.

This is actually the method that we prefer our wait list candidates use and I believe (would have to check the letter) it's even outlined in the wait list letter we send out. First, the candidate should decide if they still want to accept an appointment to CGA...if so, they should e-mail Chris McMunn by May 1st and accept their spot on the waiting list. Second, the candidate should deposit at their back-up college to ensure they don't lose other scholarship/enrollment opportunities while waiting to hear from CGA. In addition, the candidate should let their back-up college know that they are still on the waiting list for an appointment to CGA and plan to accept if offered the appointment. Finally, the candidate should submit an updated transcript to CGA and then (here's the hard part) wait for an appointment to be offered.

therefore they shouldn't be too shocked to learn that a kid is turning down one academy to go to another after May 1

We're only shocked when appointees accept their spot, but don't tell us that they're wait listed elsewhere...honesty on the front end usually works best for everyone involved.

Oh, I totally agree that they should inform the other college that they are holding out for someplace else..I was just arguing for the point that it wouldn't be unethical to take that spot they were holding out for

So if you sign the paperwork agreeing to the terms of the appoinment, it is OK to not abide by it?

if you have informed the college that yes, if my dream school gives me an appointment, I will take it.

IMHO, if you sign the contract, you should honor it, period. No matter the good intentions, where does the buck stop?

It is true that breaking contracts is never a good way to go..but if that were the case CGA couldn't give out appointments after May 1 which I'm not sure is feasible

Huh? They could give out appointments to the next available.... CGA Core Value: "Honor - Integrity is our standard. We demonstrate uncompromising ethical conduct and moral behavior in all our personal actions."

But what about this scenario:

You are waitlisted at CGA and you know you want to go there without a doubt. You decide to stay on the waitlist, but they tell you that decisions on waitlists wont be made until May 1. What should you do? Not enroll in another college and risk the chance of not being able to attend college for a year which would hurt your reapplication. And if you say, do not enroll in another college, then the waitlist would be pointless for many people

accept other colleges saying "however, i am on the waiting list for my number one school the united states coast guard academy, and will decline this offer if they come through.." they'll understand haha

My point is if you have accepted an appointment and signed the papers without disclosing your intentions to not honor it if something better comes along, and another academy offers you after May 1, it would not be ethical to accept the 2nd. Not saying it's easy, by any means. but it is a slippery slope, when you start choosing what you will or won't honor.

Its not that hard

Yes you should accept your second choice and let them know you are on the CGA Wait List.
