Hey everyone. My name is Luke. I'm a senior in high school and I live in Delafield, Wisconsin. I have recieved LOA's to both USAFA and USNA, and my chances for nominations to both look good. I'm still in the difficult decision making process of which Academy I want to attend, but I've been leaning more and more towards USNA. These forums have been a great help to me. I am thankful for everyone's time and advice. I wish I had found this forum years ago, it would have alleviated a lot of stress and uncertainty.

Hi Luke! Sounds like you're in a very similar position to my son. He's also from Wisconsin (different congressional district) and also has LOA's to Navy and AF. He did some serious research for several months, including attending both Summer Seminars, and visiting an AF and Navy base, talking to many officers from both branches and looking online for all the job opportunities. He basically determined that although he was sure he could be happy in the Navy, and that there were a lot of great options, that he was just more interested in the AF (the services themselves - he was certain he'd be glad to go to either academy equally). He's still waiting on a nomination as well - did his interviews in Madison Nov 14th, and has his congressional one this Saturday.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you'd like and I can have him get in touch with you!

Welcome to the forums and good luck! :thumb:

You should look at what job you would like to perform and which branch gives better opportunities for that field.

Thanks America's Finest and marciemie. I have been doing my research as well, and I am leaning towards the Naval Academy since I'm unsure of what I want to do career wise, and I believe they have a more more diverse field of options. I would be extremely happy to attend either Academy, and I believe both services have a lot to offer. I'm thrilled that I have been given the opportunity to become an officer in either one.

If you didn't do summer seminar or a CVW yet, you might want to contact your RD at Navy and see about getting into one of the CVW's in January or Feb (before you'd have to make a definite decision). Or contacting AF about doing a visit out there. Not sure if you've been to the academies themselves yet or not.

Thanks for the pm mumsyto3. I sent you one back.

Marciemi: Thanks for the advice again. I have indeed visited both Academies. I went to summer seminar at the AFA, and was able to shadow a cadet for a day there last winter. I also had a chance this spring to walk around the grounds at the NA. I will definitely call about attending a CVW, I was under the impression that you had to be officially accepted to attend one (I haven't received my nomination yet).

Quick question, when is the date you have to commit by?
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I believe May 1st is the commitment date for any of the academies (and most civilian schools as well). Someone recently posted a schedule of CVW's and there was one each in Jan, Feb, and March, and two in April. My son was offered the Oct or Nov dates, and he just had the LOA then, so definitely it's done before appointments.

If you don't hear anything from your regional director, PM me and I can give you the name of the Wisconsin coordinator (kind of the head BGO) - he's the one who has been contacting my son and just recently emailed to see if he was interested in one of the upcoming dates. I'm pretty sure he can put in a word for you to try to get one if you aren't offered one automatically. Or just contact your BGO and they might be able to help.

Thanks Marciemi. I just sent an email to my BGO, and I'm pretty sure he'll be able to help. If not I'll pm you about the coordinator.

Orwell, just wanted to let you know my son got another email invite to the upcoming CVW's today. If you didn't receive one, PM me and I can give you the contact at Navy listed who sent the email from Region 3 (including Wisconsin).

Marciemi, Thanks so much for all the help. I finally got my invitation yesterday, so I'm excited about that. I am trying to sign up for the January weekend, and hoping there are spots left. I also received a letter from my senator today... I got a nomination to the Naval Academy! I'm so ecstatic right now, I can't wait until I-day!

Wow - you got mail today? No such luck here with the 16 inches of snow/blizzard! Didn't you guys get hit pretty bad too? Maybe my son will hear something tomorrow - hoping for the best!

Congrats - he also emailed them about the January weekend - we'll see what they say!

Hi Orwell - yes, we got mail today and my son got his nomination as well! :thumb: Was yours from Feingold too? His nomination was to USAFA though. He was told he could only get one from the senators, but did ask his representative for both (Navy/AF), but doesn't have any idea when he'll hear on that since the interview was just Saturday.

He also received an email confirmation that he was registered for the January CVW - maybe you guys will run into one another - he'll be flying out of Milwaukee - how about you?

Good luck and thanks for the info!

That's great! Yeah, I got my nomination from Feingold, and only to the Naval Academy. I also received confirmation that I was registered for the January CVW- it would be cool to meet him. I too will fly out of Milwaukee. Congratulations to your son, this is a very exciting time.

Hi - just finished booking his flights (which was an exercise in futility! - talk about frustrating!). He's actually going out Wednesday night on Air Tran and coming back Sunday on Southwest. He'll be staying Wed and Sat night with a friend of his from summer seminar and be at Navy Thursday and Friday nights! If you're interested in getting in touch with him, just send me a PM and I'll give you his email or vice versa. Good luck!

Orwell - my son got his noms today for both AF and Navy from our Congressman. I know you're in a different district though. He didn't receive a call or email or anything - both just came up on his online applications. We also got beautiful freezing rain and another several inches of snow. Lovely.

Congratulations again. Weather hasn't been great down here, some rain and now cold cold temperatures. Makes it hard to run outside. I'm still waiting on some details before I book my flight. I should be receiving a letter any day now. I'll probably be flying out of Milwaukee as well, Thursday afternoon though.

I got a call from Senator Feingold's office a couple days ago notifying me that I would be receiving a letter of appointment from the NA soon. Very exciting. I just have to make it through a little more than a semester of HS and I'm there. School seems very much like an "exercise in futility." I know its important to keep working hard, but it can be very difficult to stay motivated at times. Still haven't heard from Senator Kohl or my congressman; I'm not very worried, I've been leaning towards the NA more and more lately. Thanks for all your help, and congrats again to your son.

Marciemi- Have you received any more information on the upcoming CVW? I've been waiting for a letter, but I haven't gotten anything so far.

Nope, nothing here either since the email. He also didn't get a call from Feingold's office at all. On his Dodmerb page, it shows a status change for Navy as of Monday (which usually indicates an appointment being issued at this point with a nom/LOA), but it doesn't show anyting for AF, even on his online app (well, it shows the nom/LOA, but no appointment offered or anything yet). I'm guessing due to the holidays. Remember last year with AF he had everything in for Summer Seminar on Dec. 1st and then nothing happened until mid-January. This may be the same! Keep checking the status pages though because you may see your noms there first like my son did!
