Hey

Decided to follow your advice and check my status page for my USAFA application- turns out I got my nomination to the AFA now too! Thanks to my local congressman I get the opportunity to choose.

I did the same last year for the AFA summer seminar app. I actually woke up at midnight to submit my application, I really wanted in and I thought this would look good. I too ended up agonizing for a month and half before hearing.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :thumb:

Sounds like you and my son are in the exact same position, but flipped! Which summer seminars did you do? I think NASS is the only thing that still has him considering Navy because he had such an awesome experience there (and I think part of the reason he's going to CVW so he can see some of his cadre/squad leader, etc.!). He thought AF SS was okay but not as "wow"! He didn't like WP's SLS at all.

If you don't mind me asking, what are some of the reasons you decided (somewhat, so far at least!) on Navy instead of AF?

Glad I told you to check your online and that you did and found out sooner! That's how he found out too. Now you guys just have to wait for it to change to "Appointment Offered!" :shake: He is waiting until after CVW to make a decision though.

So it seems like we're a day off one another on everything! My son got called by Senator Feingold's office today telling him of his USAFA appointment! They said it would go out 12/22 express mail so he should have it by Christmas! Interestingly, he also got an email from his congressman's office telling him the exact same thing (also for USAFA). Oh well, as long as he gets it, he'll be happy! However, I checked his AF page and it still doesn't show the Appointment Offered status.

Hey - just letting you know that my son's Dodmerb page now shows for Navy "Offer extended!", but he hasn't received it yet. Did get an envelope from Navy today and were briefly excited, but it was the CVW info - which at least we have now!

Got the same letter today. Was also briefly excited, only to discover what it was. Patience... I agree though, at least we have that now. Dodmerb also lists me as "offer extended" for Navy.

For the summer seminars, I was only able to go to one of them, since my school lets out in mid June. I chose to go to the Air Force ss, and I loved it. I wish I could have gone to Navy's too, but at that time I thought I was 100% committed to Air Force. However after deciding to apply to USNA, I had a great conversation with my BGO and ever since I've been leaning more and more towards Navy. What I like about the NA over the AFA is the larger diversity in career choices afterwards. I'm not sure what I want to do, though I have a interest in flying, and I do not want to be stuck behind a desk. From what I have discussed with former service members, current mids and cadets, and what I have researched online, I feel like the careers in the Navy are more to my interest than those in the Air Force. I have also heard that USNA has a strong political science program, which I am very interested in, and its proximity to DC is also a benefit both academically and for fun (after plebe year of course).

I also love the Air Force though. They have cooler planes, and mountains for skiing. Those are no reasons to pick an Academy though

Marciemi and Orwell18, I am curious to know if your Dodmerb detail shows a new date under Navy: "Admission Status change date: xxxxxx"
or is that still the approximate date of your LOA? Also, do you still have - SubAgency: NALOA or has that changed to something else?

My son's Dodmerb site shows the following:
Agency: ' US Naval Academy SubAgency: NALOA
Admission Status: Offer Extended
Admission Status Change Date: 8-SEP-2009
Current Medical Status: Pending Waiver Submission/Review (as of 25-NOV-09 )

The "Admission Status: Offer Extended" just appeared a day or two ago, but we are guessing that it is just an update in the system and is referring to the LOA offer and not to an appointment offer, as you can see we are still waiting on a medical waiver and there is no change in the Admission status date. I have searched for insight on this site (all academies and Dodmerb) and some people commented in 2007 and 2008 that when their LOA showed up in Dodmerb, it also changed to "Admission Status: Offer Extended" and this was before they even had noms (therefore, "offer extended" must have been refering to their LOA only). Their appointments came weeks/months later.

My son does have 2 senator noms for USNA (and Congressional for USMA), but we have instructions from Dodmerb to go for further vision remedial tests at a Military Treatment Facility - doing so in early January. His USMA status shows: In Process and Current USMA Medical Status: Remedial Requested (as of 03-DEC-09 ), but the remedials are not mentioned in his Navy status.

My son only applied to USMA after being DQ'd by USNA (vision) and "USNA waiver denied" and so the USMA process is further behind. We have been in contact with Larry Mullen and I think that is why the USNA Medical Status is back to: Pending Waiver Submission/Review. As we understand, he can only keep us updated from the Dodmerb side of everything and not each specific academy's waiver decisions.

As you both have your LOA , Dodmerb Qualified and Noms, I'm sure your Appointments are on their way, but I'm just trying to figure out what my son's status could mean. We are assuming we will know nothing until they have his new vision test results in January.

Okay, I'll show you what I know for my son. His medical status for all 3 academies was "Qualified" as of July 15, and his WP and AF status have not changed since that date (even though he got an AF LOA and 2 noms in the meantime). His current Navy status shows as:

Agency: ' US Naval Academy
Admission Status: Offer Extended
Admission Status Change Date: 14-DEC-2009
Current Medical Status: Qualified (as of 15-JUL-09 )

So, yes, his medical status date hasn't changed, but his Admission Status date has. Interesting that yours still shows the LOA. Before the change this week (and as of Monday it changed just the Admission Status Change Date, then yesterday to "Offer Extended"), his showed:

Agency: ' US Naval Academy SubAgency: NALOA

Admission Status Change Date: 8-SEP-2009
Current Medical Status: Qualified (as of 15-JUL-09 )

That new line with Admission Status was just added in this week and for USMA and AF it shows as "In Process" which it didn't used to.

I wish I could tell you what it all meant. I did speak with another mom whose son has an LOA to Navy, but no nom yet (that he knows of) and his also changed this week to Offer Extended. I was hoping that meant the appointment was on the way!

Orwell - thanks for your insights! Sounds like you and my son went through much of the same analysis of the two branches, but his decision leans more the other way. Interestingly, he though on the whole the Navy had cooler planes though! But I think he concluded more that there were a lot more jobs in the AF he could be happy doing if he didn't fly, and although there were nearly as many in the Navy, there were also several that he adamantly did NOT want to do in the Navy. He didn't see those in the AF. Plus the whole "being on a ship 6 of 18 months" was a big factor in the decision I think as well. Sounds like you both are taking the decision seriously, and have only helped yourselves by learning as much as you can before finally choosing. Incidentally, his school gets out mid June too, and he missed the two weeks of regular classes and finals in order to go to the three SS's. But I'm glad he did - says so far those were the three best weeks of his life!

Marciemi, thanks for sharing these details with me. I'm sure that my son's "offer extended" refers to his LOA, but with a new date showing, your son's Appointment is surely on its way. I know USNA is not his first choice, but I hope his big envelope arrives soon (of course the holiday mail and severe weather in parts of the country are probably making it slower than usual).

Congratulations to him!!

Just to update that my son got the Navy Appointment (blue folder) in the mail today! :thumb:
