High school junior weekend invitation

Just received confirmation

We just received my daughter's confirmation, she is excited to have the chance to see things on a first hand basis. The rub is that the only real registration we have done with USNA is through the STEM program this past spring. We have not filled out any additional registration forms or releases since.

To anyone with extensive knowledge of the USNA outreach programs, does this sound like its enough to send a 17 year old a thousand miles away from home? I am waiting for a reply from the Marine contact in Annapolis, but in today's litigable environment we live in there would be more paperwork. Or.... maybe I think about these things too much.

Please throw in what you know to calm a father's mind.

Thanks

So how many juniors do they invite?

At the CVW last Feb there were quite a few juniors - I guess 10-20% of those present.

Bikndave: CVW is a recruiting tool that the NA uses to show candidates just how great it is "on the inside". So they saw something they liked at STEM and are trying to keep your DD from chosing MIT or Stanford. Send her if she's at all interested - but she does need to get on the stick and get her paperwork going (assuming she's a rising senior). My Plebe went and it solidified her decision. You should go too if possible; the tours alone were worth it. The facilities and undergraduate opportunities were equal to or better than any we saw on our tours of top engineering colleges.

osdad -

Thanks for the advice. I am certain that she will go, no questions whatsoever. She just started her Junior year of HS today, and being in an IB program; you just don't take days off if you can help it. The CVW would be an easy exception to make. She didn't get to go to STEM, but I think it was because we sent her app in at the last week or two.

So I also was invited to attend this Junior Candidate Visit Weekend but will not be able to attend due to parents. My question is even though I can't go will my being invited be considered an advantage/something I can use when I apply to USNA?

Anyone else going on 9/16?

DD is going up there for the Junior CVW, is anyone else going? Just wanted to see if there was potential for someone to split the cost of the ride from BWI to USNA...

PM me and let me know.

(BTW, the Annapolis transit bus RTE 60 is no longer  . They ended it in July, so everything is commercial - Supershuttle and the like -, not cheap at all..)

I will be taking my son up on that Thursday. Plan to walk around a little and take in the parents briefing.

bikndave: (Or any other parents whose kiddos are going to CVW's, jr or sr) If you parents can afford to go along, do so! You can tour, get a feel for the place, check out Annapolis. Use hotwire to get hotels within walking distance. I have repeatedly booked the Westin, which is 1.5 miles from T-Court, for less than $80. It is worth the trip if your kiddo is at all seriously considering USNA.....and would also be helpful if your child was considering any other SA. It is such a different experience than the traditional college or university, it is worth a parent going along if at all possible.

Let us know how it goes! And know for certain that there are many parents on the forum who would love to be dropping in to Annapolis for the weekend!

Thank you!

Center56 - Thanks for letting me know, my DD has a ride now. But I appreciate the offer.

Jennyp - I really wish I could go up there for the CVW:unhappy:. I've been there before but the DD hasn't so this will be for her experience more than anything. Oh yes and DD is one of four, the others have their EC's, school, my work, etc.....

My DS who is a plebe there now, said he will be hosting one of the High School students - he was excited about the opportunity. He had wanted to go to the Academy for many years, so excited when he got in, survived Plebe Summer and so-far-so-good, is diving right in to the academic year. It's a fairly tough school and in my opinion you really have to want it to go there, but the rewards are tremendous! Also my advice to future applicants, it's a great place if that's what you want, but it is a military school and you will be in the military, please go to these visit week-ends if you get a chance, hopefully my son can give you some good advice!

Second CVW

Has anyone ever heard of getting another CVW? I went to one in June and am supposed to be getting another packet (per admissions). Is there a benefit to going to a second weekend? Why do you think I am being asked to attend another one?

DS attended a CVW in April (his junior year) and just received another invitation for a CVW in October. We have also been invited to an admissions forum at USNA this weekend (we will be attending). I am curious what all this means as well since DS's application is almost complete

Well, quite obviously, it "means" the Naval Academy considers your son a viable and competitive applicant. That's a good thing.

If you're waiting for somebody to tell you, "It virtually guarantees him an appointment." - No.

Sadly, the path is littered with with NASS, STEM, and CVW attendees who never got appointments.

I would see it as encouraging, however. Good luck!

Thanks Memphis9489. I certainly know there are no guarantees. I was confused by the fact that DS's application is nearly complete when receiving these invitations because I thought they were more geared toward those who are trying to decide if the USNA if right for them. Believe me, any interest/encouragement at this stage is welcome - everytime a TWE comes in the mail, our hearts skip a beat.

Shelbyboyz - there will be no TWE because your DS's application isn't complete. Review board doesn't look at apps until they are complete. The sooner the appllication gets before the review board the better - even if they don't give the green light at the first review, they will continue to consider it at future sittings. However, as time goes by, the competition necessarily increases as more applications come before the board. Also remember that the nominations and DODMERB physical are the other prongs that must be satisfied. Even then, geographic location and the competition inherent with that also play a role - more competition in the northeast compared to the Dakotas. So, the application is probably the one thing that you have the most control over.

CVW are given even after an appointment is issued. Candidates must reply by a certain day in the spring (forget exactly when) of their intent to accept the appointment but can change their mind as late as I-day. My Plebe was sent the blue folder in Jan and was invited to CVW in Feb. It solidified her decision - which is exactly the intent.

DS has everything completed for his application, just waiting on the BGO to submit the interview that was done a few weeks ago. We are in a highly competitive area and knew that everything needed to be completed asap. The review board begins meeting any day now?

Yes, I think they either met for first time last week or it is this week.

Your son's BGO interview was conducted "a few weeks ago" and it still has not been entered into the CIS? I would check on that.

Given some LOA's are starting to surface as well as CVW's it appears they met last week for sure.

DS's BGO indicates he is now showing "Academically qualified", so that also appears to be an indication they met as well.

For anyone that hasn't already asked or wants to know, for those not able to attend this juniors candidate visit weekend in September I emailed admissions and they said they will have another one in April.
