Does anyone have advice on the HI301X/HI302X "History of the Military Art" courses? Should we take one, both, none as plebes?

It’s good to knock it out if you can. Otherwise you take it as a firstie when your motivation may be low...

You will not take MilArt as a Plebe, at least in most circumstances. You will take HI101, essentially Army history, first semester, and a regional or US history second semester. You don't have much say in your schedule for Plebe and Yuk year.

Is the only way to take it plebe year through validation of the regional/US history courses? It says to submit AP scores for Euro, US history, and World as well as any college history course grades if you have them to Maj Campbell-- do you have any idea what AP test score would be required for validation? In my case I only took AP world/APUSH (all that was offered at my HS) got 4's on both tests and an A in college level American Indian history (don't know how much help that would be in the validation process). Also, is it even worth it to try and validate those two courses?

That was the case it used to be yes. The X on the end of the course designated it was a plebe only section (and experimental as there were some sections they had plebes mixed directly in with firsties but they tried to avoid that for a number of reasons).

You can do a search on these forums for some good discussions of pros/cons of validating courses. I am of the opinion you should validate any and all courses you can to free up space for course work you’re actually interested in/research potential and because you go to West Point for the challenge, not to repeat classes you’ve already done for an easy class

I took Mil Art as a Plebe because I validated World and American History. It’s worth it. Also really good instructors.
