HOBY ALA Scam?

passiionfruit,

I am also sorry you didnt like girls state. Honestly that is the first EVER negative review I have ever heard.

My oldest boy went to Boys state only because he was told it would look good on his USNA resume. Luckily our high school did not send people in the past so he was able to get that spot. He ran for every office and didnt get elected to a single thing. He still loved it so much that the following year, as a high school senior (after he was already admitted to USNA), he spoke to all of the Junior year social studies to tell them about how GREAT it was. After NASS it was the best experience he ever had (according to him)

He talked his younger brother into going the following year. Son #2, went just to get away from his mother for a wk. However, he ended up loving it so much that he wrote his college essays about how much he got out of it and how great it was.

Two completely different kids going for completely different reasons both had extremely positive experiences.

With regards to Time2's quote (Originally Posted by time2 )

I recently spoke at a huge admissions briefing, while in the presenter room I was able to get some insight from presenters from usna admissions and they reiterate what Time2 states.

So in other words if you want to go to Hoby because it sounds cool, and you have plenty of money...you may get something good out of it...It just wont be points on your WCS.

Folks,

Let's keep this thread centered on the role of various leadership programs in USNA admissions. This is not the place to debate the merits of one program over another or whether a particular program is worth the cost. That can be done in the "Off Topic" forum.

Thank you.

USNA1985, If the poster was asking whether something was worth the cost with regards to payoff towards admissions, or if you are debating the merits of one program over another with regards to admission, isn't this the place to post it?

Yes, but it needs to relate to USNA. The fact that one program is better/worse than another or costs more/less doesn't necessarily mean it's better/worse for USNA. For example, a particular program could be viewed by a participant as being terrible and not being worth the cost; however, if USNA thinks it's a terrific program, that's what counts (for purposes of this forum).

^^^ I agree. Also one of the reasons it is better to start a new thread when one has a different question rather then tack onto a thread from a few weeks ago which might be a totally different question.

Asking about the value of Girls/Boys state is NOT what the original question was asking.

I did attend HOBY as my school's delegate, and it WAS paid for, but I was not at all impressed by it. I'm glad I went (to my regional seminar, not the National one), because it does have a positive reputation and looks good on applications. However I found it to be very one sided; they told us they would teach us HOW to think not WHAT to think, yet all the speakers were Democrats who praised liberal ideals. I got much more out of being SGA President at my school, participating in my Chamber of Commerce's leadership development program, and attending SGA District and State meetings. I would NEVER pay $850 to attend a HOBY event, in fact if someone offered to pay for me, I'm not sure I would go.

Check out the National Flight Academy at the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola. Expensive, but they do offer scholarships. Now THAT camp was the best one I EVER attended, it was free to me, and it convinced me I want to be in the Navy. You basically live a week on a simulated aircraft carrier, hang out with the Blue Angels, and fly simulators ALL week. Night at the Museum, Navy style. God I want to go back just thinking about it.
