Hold Status

Academy was targeting a class size of approximately 270 PC's. They are waiting on approximately 170 candidates to respond to their principal offers. Additionally, DODMERB is behind on all medical reviews and appeals which effects all the FSA's. USMMA admissions is also short one Officer at this time which is causing delays there. Hold candidates will probably not hear anything until the end of May or later unfortunately.

Did one of the regional admissions officers leave? The website still shows one officer per region. My regional officer was VERY responsive, but haven't heard responses of late. Assumed he was very busy, but based on your note I wonder if somebody left and KP didn't update the website.

Commander Bedryk is on active duty deployment. CDR Watson is currently in charge of admission's.

DS is still on hold (2 months) after being cleared from a medical waiver and submitting his transcript a second time when Admissions indicated they had not received it.

I am an actively sailing alumni from '97 and am having a heck of a time getting information to assist / support his and another candidate from SC. Supposedly there are four slots, and 4 qualified applicants from SC, but Admissions has only offered LOAs to two applicants. Both students are high school sailors and are interested in sailing for the Varsity Dinghy Team. They have had contact with the coach, but it is unclear if they are being recruited.

I have been informed that target recruitment numbers have been lowered from 280ish to 250ish, which is very concerning as an alumni and an actively sailing Captain in the Merchant Marines. I have witnessed first hand the shortage of qualified mariners in the industry and am increasingly concerned about the ability of the United States to man its reserve fleet in a a time of war or international crisis. Additionally, the new Admiral for the school has indicated that recruiting is down due to poor PR for the school.

I am not here to rant for my son's application. I am here to push all of you who are on hold to do everything you can to tip the scales in your favor. Write a followup to the Admissions Office. Contact your representatives and get them to advocate for you as a nominee. If you are in a sport program, contact the coach or athletic director at KP and advocate for yourself. If you want to go to the Merchant Marine Academy no is the time for you to fight for what you want the most.

When I applied to King's Point in 1993 I did so for what, to me, were all the right reasons. I was an average student and I got in a bit of hot water that the school was made aware of my senior year. I was accepted two weeks before Indoctrination began. I do not wish that challenge on anyone, especially those that are fully qualified and ready to attend a very challenging school that is filled with opportunity and reward.

Best of luck to all and if anyone reading has advice to offer, we are all listening.
My DD contacted the coach when she saw that a couple of weeks had passed and a waiver hadn't been requested. Shortly after, USMMA requested her waiver. DD's appointments and AMI response were completed within three weeks. She was placed on hold when the waiver was requested. About two weeks ago she checked the portal and her status had changed to waiver denied (or something along those lines), but she didn't receive any notice. She finally received her TWE last week. I have to say that we were highly disappointed, but it just wasn't meant to be. I guess DD is proof that being a recruited athlete doesn't necessarily help.

Just a heads up for anyone waiting. The May 1st deadline is going to be extended to may 15th.
Please share where your information came from. Is this from reduced applications? DODMERB delays? An overwhelmed and underperforming Admissions Office? Directives for diversity increases?

So I didn't post it, but shortly after reading the post, I received the same info from the USMMA Parent's Association. I have a son there now, and one applying for 2027.

All of he above. Overall applications are down approximately twenty percent over past years. The other FSA's are also experiencing a similar drop in applicants. This is for several reason's, Embarc has negatively impacted sea year, and the Academy has definitely taken some hits over the last couple of years regarding SASH. Number of female applicants are down significantly over past years. Admissions had targeted 250-270 appointments. As of 4/27, less than 180 applicants had accepted their appointments. DODMERB has been way behind in medical reviews and processing waiver requests. They are starting to catch up however. Admissions is currently down one position, with CDR Bedryk on active duty deployment. CDR Watson is currently in charge of admissions, in his absence. Under CDR Bedryk admissions ran efficiently if not perfect. That is not the case currently. Your complaint about multiple submission's of paperwork is one of many similar unfortunately. This has necessitated the involvement of the Academic Dean. You indicated that you are an alumni, so I'm sure if you were to reach out to some people (JT) you could find out more details. Any additional comments from me regarding the current situation with Admissions would be derogatory, and since you are a alumni, I'm sure you are familiar the the lack of competency of many KP staff. Diversity increases has nothing to do with the current situation. Hope this helps, and good luck to your son.

In the alumni call this past week, the superintendant was quoted as saying they are targeting 280 for this class.

So one question, what is this comment based on... we've personally had radio silence, and that's my sense from others on the forums. Are #'s published of how many are in queue, how many are cleared per week, etc. It seems as though there is no accountability for DoDMERB.

currently stated on my portal is “ready for review” looking at all my stats…
medically qualified.

not sure why I am still waiting for a response other than I just have to wait as it is rolling admissions. Staying hopeful

No one on this forum knows what is going on with your individual file. You should contact Admissions to learn where you stand. Good luck.
