Well... I got a letter from one of my senators about a week ago. It said that they did not want to interview me. Dang... then just a few days ago I got letters from both my Congressman (did the interview) and senator on the same day. they both said no. I am down to the VP and the ROTC nominations. What are the probablity of getting those?

My liaison was talking to the Regional commander for admissions, and he said that West Point liked my application a lot. they were just waiting for the nomination. he was surprised that I did not even get a interview with any senator. I went through my paperwork to see where I went wrong, but I could not figure it out. I even had a my friend's (who is at USNA) dad go through it to see anything sounded wrong, and he could not find anything. now my school has sent 3 in the past 2 years to an academy. would that possibly affect their decisions? (giving other schools a chance?)

btw, did anyone else have problems with ACT sending the lastest scores the Seantors' and Congressman's office? I found out during the interview that they only had my 1st time's score, but the academies showed they had my latest scores.

thx

Score

Yes about the scores. My daughter had her nomination interview last night with our congressman's committee and they did not have the lastest SAT scores that she took early November. She did bring it with her but she was not allowed to bring anything into the meeting. Since she had an LOA I don't think it is a problem but just in case she will sent a thank you note along with a copy.

Are you from a competitive state? I don't think it has anything to do with distributing wealth. How did you rack and stack to the students from your school that went?

I am in Indiana. I dont know if we are a competive state. Compared to the others: I did more sports, same activity in the school, same in community service, and was in between the 2nd and 3rd students' GPA.

yeti -

help me to help you -

you applied to USMA and USNA? correct?
You are in Jr Army ROTC? Is this an honor JROTC unit?

Have you applied for a ROTC nomination yet?
You did not win a nomination from any of your three members of congress - correct?

Let me know and I can help out a little.....

Since your JROTC Honor unit can nominate you for any academy - that is great news for you.

With that nomination - the academy will have legal authority to appoint you.
Bottom line is lack of a nomination won't keep you from getting an appointment

It is true that you should not give up hope, especially if you have the possibility of a JRTOC nom. However, if things don't work out this year, my suggestion is to talk with your BGO (and the equivalent for USMA) regarding your nom packet and your overall status. Typically, they have seen a number of students over a number of years and may be able to point out potential weaknesses in your application. Or, it could just be a very competitive year in your state/district.

Noms are also very subjective. I've had candidates get a nom from Senator #1 and get rejected for an interview from Senator #2. I've had candidates get 2 noms and no appointment. And, I've even had one get no noms and still get an appointment.

Hang in there.

I'm not an expert, just the parent of a midshipman. In my observation it is way too soon to give up on anything. I believe that the admissions office (at least at the USNA) has a better idea of what they want in a midshipman than a typical MOC. The admissions office is totally dedicated to putting together the best possible class.

Not to denigrate MOCs, but nominations to the academies are just one of so many things that compete for their attention, and frankly a lot of them leave this almost entirely to their staffs.

If an academy wants you in the class, a nomination will be found. I tend to think that the advice to stick close to your BGO (for USNA) is very sound.:thumb:

Go, Yeti!! Congratulations on your nomination!!! :yay: :yay:

Share the news with your Liasion Officer and stay touch with him/her while you wait. Update your file with any awards, honors - academic or athletic- that you get in the next few months. Keep making good grades. You also have one more chance to take the SAT and/or the ACT in January.

Good Luck and thanks for letting us know your good news!!!
