Greetings Fellow Homeschoolers:

For those homeschooled (HS) candidates and/or HS parents that were successful in achieving a LOA/Nomination to a US Service Academy, just how much detail did the Academy Admissions / Congressional Staff require for homeschool transcripts? We have seven children, so our kid's transcripts are comprised of hand-written notebook entries that aren't in the greatest detail. They're legible, but nowhere near professional looking documentation. Do I need to put together some kind of Excel spreadsheet with homework, quiz and chapter test grade information, or are they primarily interested in curriculum information?

I'd really appreciate anyone's help and advice with this. I really don't want to 'drop the ball' with this, especially with how hard my boys have worked to get this far.

I thank you for your time and effort.

After USNA received our transcript, DS received a letter from admissions stating, “Per the directions on our website, please provide me a brief synopsis of all courses taken 9th-12th grade. I will also need a list of all reference material used including edition. Please try to keep to a maximum of 15 pages. When I have received this information I will at that time mark your transcript ‘received.’”

The synopsis required includes course title, length of course, date completed, grade, grading scale, textbooks, and a course description. Check the USNA website to verify requirements.

Our submission was 15 pages for grades 9-11 plus a cover letter detailing our state requirements.

Feel free to PM for homeschool related questions.

The MOC requirements will vary with each MOC. Our MOCs accepted a standard transcript with no additional details.

We submitted similar documentation to USAFA for DS who is a 2016 grad. His was only 6 pages long, but included ISBN numbers for each text book, a course description, and a 1 page summary with courses by year, grades, and GPA. I found a nice MS Word template online for the summary.

My kid is at USMA but I prepared a one page transcript that looked very similar to what a traditional school transcript would look like. Then I included a few pages that listed his clubs/activities, sports, and awards/honors. Then the last section was many pages long as it described each class he had taken in high school - classes taken at home, co-op and county college. All books used in each class were included.
It gave a very clear idea of what my son had done throughout high school.

Our kid is at USNA - and our info was the same set up as bookreader above. The transcript was very organized and thorough. USNA had a question about one particular class (I think it was about a physics class), otherwise there were no issues with what we submitted. The more clarity the better.
