Honesty is still the best policy, right? Character matters, right?

It's interesting to me that a number of aspiring candidates seem reticent about being "too honest" when it comes to disclosure about past alcohol consumption and/or drug use. Their obvious, and understandable, concern is that such disclosure will wreck their chances of being offered an appointment. I've seen this in threads here and there on this forum. I was happy to see the recent thread from a current Mid who encouraged all just to tell the truth. However, I don't see as many threads like that from the candidates' generation. Rather, there are several of "do I have to?" and "it was only one time", etc., etc.

My steady counsel is that the Powers That Be are less interested in past behavior provided it is firmly in the past and far more interested in those who display character as evidenced by being completely honest when answering such questions. BGOs and other influencers, I may be "old school" but I am on the right path with my advice, correct?

My class ('94) was absolutley rocked by the E.E scandal (public knowledge, not speaking in a derogatory way about my class).
