My DS was invited to apply to the honors program at Norwich. Does anyone have any feedback on it? Is it worth it? Any benefit Army-wise? Is it a lot of extra work etc…

I'm curious about this too, my son was also invited to apply to Norwich's honors program ! We're hoping to get more info on it at the accepted students weekend at the end of the month. Right now we're waiting to hear about his NROTC acceptance so I'm especially interested in knowing if he does get it if it, would be too much doing both programs.

All the colleges are doing this. My oldest DD did it for one semester and felt it wasn't worth her time at her university. It is suppose to put them classes that don't exceed 25 or 30, they do a certain amount of extra-curricular activities to earn honors points (nothing to do with the academic records) it gives them travel and activity opportunities. Most honors college organizations give small scholarships to a few members with the most honors points. My other DD (the one applying for ROTC) is going to go to Norwich, was also invited to Honors Program but wasn't interested based off of her sister's experience. She feels she is going to busy enough with Corps of Cadets, hopefully ROTC and would like to play a club or varsity sport. She also applied for the Norwich Civic Scholars Program which potentially gives a $3K scholarship per year and requires public service hours each week while enrolled...so she'll be plenty busy IMO.

My DS was also asked to apply for the civic scholars but we thought that one would be too much with ROTC etc :) he did end up applying for the honors program thinking if it’s too much he can drop it (assuming he gets into it… will know in April).

If anyone hears more I’d love to know. At some point he’ll just have to give it a try and see if it’s worthwhile. Thanks for the replies, guys.

My son was also invited to apply for the civic scholars in addition to the honors program. He did apply to both of them and hopes to get more information about both programs at the end of the month. If he gets NROTC that will of course be his top priority 🤞 !

Is NROTC not something the kids just sign up for and join as an elective? I’ve heard there are constraints on numbers of students they can take but I would think at Norwich they’d have space… is that wrong?y DS will he participating in AROTC (no scholarship at this time…) but I assumed he could just do that, not have to get accepted per se.

He should probably reach out the the AROTC rep. at Norwich to get this answered but I believe you are correct that they can participate without scholarship. If there are constraints or limits to the number of enrollees, I would imagine those with scholarships get preference. My DD was told by her ROTC rep that there was plenty of room for her if she gets the scholarship.

My understanding at Norwich is that if you apply as a cadet (vs civilian) you choose your branch and are then in the ROTC program. If you are not awarded a national scholarship, then you may have the opportunity to earn one on campus. I'm not sure what happens after the second year, but there shouldn't be any issue going into NROTC or AROTC without a scholarship as a freshman at Norwich. Of course, always best to go to the source at the University

This is how I thought it went. When you elect corps of cadets in your application that means you’ll be participating in ROTC. I think the poster above is waiting on scholarship “acceptance””. We are too :) but if none comes he’ll earn it once he’s there, I’m crossing my fingers.

According to my son who is a 1st year cadet, to belong to Corp of Cadets, you have to participate in ROTC ( I think it's the cadets choice which branch ??). And you definitely can do this without a scholarship. My son did, then was awarded a 3.5 yr scholarship in December. They are competitive but attainable.

How do you apply for the 3.5 scholarship?

He pursued this his first semester. I'm not sure exactly how, but I think the information is made available through the ROTC at the school. I think it's pretty competitive. He is in AROTC.
