Hotels for R day and A day

Booked in Fishkill. They say the reservations are non refundable but if you persist they have some wiggle room. I have until June 30 to cancel or change reservations..

We booked in Fishkill for A-Day too - I was sold on Springhill Suites from an earlier post. Looks pretty nice, especially for a kid who will just eat and sleep.

I think I booked in Peekskill...anyone stayed there?
Peekskill is about 10 miles from West Point. The road to Peekskill after you cross the Bear Mountain bridge is rather curvy and dark so just be aware of this when returning late at night. It is easy access to Metro North if you wanted to take the train south to Manhattan and also centrally located for shopping and restaurants. There are some nice restaurants right on the Hudson River if you want to relax and take in some really pretty views. Try the Taco Dive Bar, Gleason's or Peekskill Brewery :)

My order of preference:
  1. Thayer - pricey but can't beat the location, accommodating staff that has been through R day, A day, Parent's Weekend, etc
  2. Holiday Inn Express, Ft Montgomery - only a few minutes outside gate, large, clean rooms
  3. Doubletree, Nanuet - near palisades parkway, decent with large rooms, can get room with huge Jacuzzi (great in cold weather)
  4. Hilton Garden Inn, Nanuet - near palisades parkway, decent rooms
  5. Residence Inn, Orangeburg - a little further than Nanuet, good if you want fridge, stove, etc
  6. Park Ridge Marriott - near Garden State Parkway, less convenient than Palisades, nice hotel.
Haven't tried hotels near Newburgh airport - less convenient if you're flying into/out of Newark/JFK

We stayed there this summer at a Holiday Inn Express when we went for a tour and it was nice. It’s a pretty drive, but definitely winding mountain roads. It’s not far, but it does take a little longer because being a flat lander I drove a little more slowly. :). I’m used to being able to see for miles! My son hasn’t gotten an appointment yet but if he does we may go back there. If I didn’t have to consider cost I would stay at Thayer for the convenience but I definitely have to consider the cost so we’ll be staying somewhere cheaper, or, you know, maybe just sleeping in our car. I’m kidding! :)

I am sure there are no rooms available at this point, but the army IHG hotel right across from the West Point Cemetery is by far the best location and most convenient place you could stay. It is not much to look at, but is comfortable and functional. Tough to get a room on the busy weekends though.

The Thayer is extremely extremely expensive. If you go to West Point frequently, like my wife and I do, you probably don't want to spend $250 to $300 per night on a room, particularly if you aren't in the room all that much.

We have stayed in hotels at most of the above suggested towns, and all of them are very viable and suitable options. We typically just go to Google Maps, plug the dates in, and check the entire area out, looking for the the available option, considering both location and the hotel. There really is no clear best option, but depends on the circumstances, and availability.

If you are taking a Cadet candidate to R-day, you will need to get there quite early, and won't want to be late. Thus, proximity to West Point is important. For A-day, you actually want to have a hotel which will be a comfortable place for your Cadet to crash, and in an area where your family can get a real good meal. I think Newburgh is the best place for both. Along the waterfront in in Newburgh there is an area with several outstanding restaurants. Billy Joe's ribworks, and The Pizza Shop are two places where we have eaten frequently, and I can say are outstanding. It is a neat little area. Fishkill is also just over the bridge, and will take about 5 or 10 minutes more to get to than Newburgh. Both towns are good options for A-day.

I will chime in for those parents that have not been road warriors prior their child going away to school. We have spent a small fortune traveling all over Gods Green Earth for soccer tournaments so I utilize Hotels.com which allows you to earn a free night after every ten. I also utilize the hotel chain rewards in essence double dipping on the rewards. Every little bit helps. I have not found that much of a difference in price between booking directly with the hotel chain or through Hotels.com. Most Hotels including Thayer (on off dates) utilize Hotels.com to fill empty rooms. I just paid $149 a night at Thayer for our DD shadow days in February.

You can find rooms at the theater for reasonable rates, but not during the big weekends. If your are going to WP in he middle of the week during the summer, or even during the school year, deals exist there. In my mind hat is the best time to "experience the Thayer".

We have stayed at the Residence Inn Fishkill. Provides a kitchen to warm up dinners from home. It is a bit of a drive from WP, but that is a relief for the cadets. Also close to Walmart for supplies.
