Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels that are within walking distance of the Naval Academy for I-day and PPW activities? The Marriott looks close, though is expensive.

:thumb:Do some searches for threads/posts spring and early summer last year -- plenty of parent input and advice.

The Marriott Waterfront is the closest chain hotel in DTA (downtown Annapolis) within easy walking distance.

Many families stay at DTA bed and breakfast properties.
http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/annapolis-maryland.html

Many stay just a bit out of DTA, and about a 1 mile-ish walk, from the Loew's Annapolis, O'Callahans and Westin Hotels on West St. - in "uptown Annapolis." I believe some of them also have shuttles that drop you downtown. There is also a taxi stand at the foot of Main St.

Many stay at chain properties such as Hampton Inn, Marriott Courtyard, etc., that cluster around the Annapolis Mall but run shuttles.

The Naval Academy Alumni Association website, www.usna.com, has corporate members which offier special rates to "USNA friends and family." I've copied the page from their website into this post below.

From what I've read on here, many families have great success with hotwire and priceline to get better deals on hotel rates.

Here's the Naval Academy Alumni Association hotel page:

Revised 1/19/10 (Bold listings are downtown

The Marriot is probably the best as far as walking distance, as it it right near the Annapolis City Dock. There is also Lowes Annapolis Hotel on West Street, but that is considerably farther to walk. Both of these are pricey. I don't know if you've ever been to Annapolis before, but it is pretty quaint in the downtown area. There are B and Bs along with the two hotels I mentioned (read, pricey); however, the less expensive chain hotels (Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express) are located outside of downtown, and are not within walking distance to USNA.

I live in Annapolis currently, and this is my experience as a townie.

You're smart to look for walking distance for I-Day and PPW. Both these events hit during extremely hot and humid weather for our Mid, and it was great to be able to head back to a/c when the schedule allowed.

Since then, our Mid seems to prefer that we stay somewhere away from DTA when we visit, so I rationalize that now we're amortizing those steep plebe-year rack rates.

walking distance

We stayed at Loews for both IDay and PPW. Not a bad walk, for IDay the short walk going into the gate gave us a little time to talk before you say that last goodby. Great location for PPW, fun walking with all the other families back to the gate at the end of the night when they have to return back to Bancroft. Plebes and their families all heading back and stopping for that one last ice cream cone or whatever other excuse to get a couple extra minutes with them before they return. The Marriot is very close to gate one as well. Enjoy it, PPW is a very amazing time, I day is just a blur.

Marriott is closest but VERY expensive. Also be sure to ask about parking. DTA has very limited parking and some hotels charge for parking/valet which you might not realize until you arrive. Hotels near the mall have lots of free, onsite parking but not within walking distance. Also ask if they run any shuttle buses to the Academy, since many do.

We have stayed at the Westin, O'Callaghans, and the Loews - and have walked to town and the yard from there.

Distance wise, the Westin is the furthest, then O'Callaghans, then Loews.

For I-Day this year, I booked three rooms at the Loews through Hotwire (84.00) each. I have found with Hotwire that the 4 star hotels in Annapolis are the Loews or the Westin (Westin has a pool, Loews does not). At least that has been my experience.

All the hotels have shuttles to downtown it you don't want to walk.

Marriot has always been too pricey for us :)

Another option is the Historic Inns of Annpolis (pretty much in the center of town). We have not stayed there however.

Hope this helps.

themutis: the "house" we stayed in at I-Day last year was $250 for three bedrooms, kitchen, living area. Only 2 blocks at most from main gate. If you are going to be there a few days, might want to consider this option as you can do some meals there. Annapolis Accomodations.

Large family's

Residence Inn is the best for large families. You get a FREE full breakfast every morning and the rooms have a full kitchen. It is near the mall but Traffic is not as bad as most say. You just have to go in Gate 8 and miss all the downtown stufff. We were there for a few days before and after. It also has a pool, and a basketball/tennis court. A picnic area with gas grill for your use and it is really comfortable. We had one of the super large 2 bedroom suites and it slept all 7 of us.

My two cents on Historic Inns (have stayed their twice) would be to avoid it. Had a really bad experience on many levels over PPW last year.

I would recommend the Westin (really nice hotel, does offer discounts and is within walking distance).

The Sheraton and DoubleTree have been recommended to me but I have not stayed there.

Homing in on hotels vs. USNA Gate 1

See my earlier post...

Also, it's handy to use 1 Craig St., Annapolis, MD, in Google Maps to pinpoint the USNA Walk Gate near USNA Gate 1, and start working your way outward from that to get a feel for how far hotels are from USNA Gate 1 walk gates, the usual pedestrian entrances. There's also another walk gate for Gate 1, on Randall St. Randall St. is so short, just over a block long, that you don't need a street address to pinpoint it. Craig St. is even shorter, just a connector from Dock St. to Prince George St.

1 Craig St. is actually the business address for Sofi's Crepes, a spot popular with many mids.

Walking distance hotels are usually the B&B's in DTA (downtown Annapolis) and the Waterfront Marriott, with Loew's, the Westin and O'Callahan's in Uptown Annapolis on West St. Walking distance, yes, but minutes longer. Some have shuttles.

The business chain properties out near Riva Road/Admiral Cochrane Rd./Mall usually have shuttles and cater to the Academy parent trade. See specifics in my earlier post this thread.

There are lots of good tips on here in previous threads from last year on rates, using Priceline or similar bidding sites, shuttles, etc.

Don't hesitate to call the properties directly to ask questions about distances, shuttles, how it all works. USNA major events are part of the rhythm of the town.

Thanks JennyP - good to hear that you had a good experience with them.

For I-day, we are only there for one day - so that wasn't an option.

For PPW (as soon as we know when it is) we will definitely rent a house - which house did you rent?

Thanks! Go Navy! We were just down there last weekend, my son got to do another overnight with the lacrosse team, and we're all so excited!

What about stuff to do while in Annapolis that is not specific to USNA?
Why not see some of the finest community theatre in the country at Colonial Players on East Street? Shameless plug there:yllol: I'm only kidding,of course. I know that there is very little chance we'd ever get an audience of USNA parents or mids. However, Admiral(Ret.) Larson is a patron...I've seen him at a couple of Colonial Shows.

We rented the cheapest house we could that would sleep 6 of us! If you go to Annapolis Accomodations website, enter your dates, then search properties.....we stayed in Residence 870, brown with a red door. It was great. It was even for sale and for grins, I called the realtor. $513,000. So, we only rented for three days. It would be fantastic for plebe parent weekend. Living area for plebe to relax, watch tv. Place for Mom to cook. Close so you don't spend much time in traffic. It is maybe two blocks from main gate. Half block from waterfront. If you are going to require more than one hotel room, I highly recommend this option.

I did not rent house PPW, as I was the only one who got to go! So, got a room at the Westin and enjoyed the 1.5 mile one way walk twice/day.

Thanks JennyP - that house looks perfect - as soon as we know PPW I'll try and book it.

Just booked Lowes for I-day eve through Hotwire: $85 + tax.

I was wondering the same thing. How many "stars" would Loew's be? How can you be sure the hotel you get will be within walking distance of the Academy? The prices look great, but what if you get stuck with a hotel you don't want?
