How big of a factor is the competitiveness of your district?

I don't know of any school that considers a visit or interest card to be an application, the figure I gave is right from the USNA Admissions Office as of SY 2014-15

While the question and concern is about the competitiveness of a congressional district; realize too that all the appointments from the representative's and senator's slates, only make up about half of the class. So even if you didn't win the golden ticket appointment from your representative or senator, you still had the National Pool selections.

So, assuming about 500-550 appointments came from the reps/senator's slates; and another 100-150 came from military related slates like presidential, ROTC, etc. You were still in the national pool competing for another 500-600 appointments.

And remember..... You can only do the BEST that you can do. Or the best you're willing to TRY. It doesn't matter what the competition looks like. You have no control over their scores; their interviews; their extra curricular activities; etc. All you have control over is yourself. So; be the best that YOU can be. Get the best GPA and SAT/ACT scores you can. Get the most leadership and team experiences you can. Give the best interviews you can. Then, when the dust settles and the appointments are given out..... no matter the results, you'll be able to say: "I gave it my best". You'll be able to live with that and move forward. Either Plan-B schools; ROTC; Re-applying; etc.

ONLY YOU can say whether or not you gave it everything you had. Some people don't like to admit that they probably could have done better. But at least admit it to yourself. Never look for what the average is; the minimum standards are; etc. Look at what the BEST you can do is. ALWAYS do the best. Your goal in school should be a 4.0 gpa, 36 ACT, 800 SAT each, Captain/Leader of every activity/sports/club/etc. you belong to, etc. You can only do the best that you are capable of doing. If you do your best and try your hardest, you'll be able to live with the results. If you don't do your best or simply try to get by, then that's all you'll ever get in life.

Best of luck.
