How did I not get AFROTC scholarship

Major: Computer Engineering (Hopefully double major B.A.)
Class of 2010
GPA: 3.87/4 (unweighted)
Class Rank: Top 50 is all they tell me. Im thinking around 25-35 out of 250
SAT: 2100, 690 reading, 750 math, 660 writing
AP classes: AB Calc (5), US (5), Chem (4), English Language(4), Computer Science, Physics, French, Government
Honors: Pretty much everything. Honors track for English since middle school, honors track for social studies since middle school, accelerated math level, doubled up in sciences, honors french

Extra Curriculars:
Plenty of volunteer hours, Boys State, Captain of the math team, Captain of the soccer team, vice president of my class freshman year, president sophomore year, National Merit Commended.

PFAs perfect. 9:18 1.5 mile, 66 pushups, 55 sit ups.

What's the deal? My interview was amazing, I was with the guy for 2+ hours talking about everything. I may be venting but I just don't understand.

The only thing I could think of as to why they wouldn't accept you is they didn't like something in a recommendation or your personal statement that was said. Other than that, just don't give up hope and try again if you must.

AFROTC is way overmanned. My APAS instructor recently told all of us 200s that there are hundreds more sophomores than POC slots this year. So some people wont get to go to field training this summer and thus will get disenrolled.

Those stats are exceptional. The only reason I could think you got denied was because of the overmanning problem. Bad timing. There are lots of other options out there. Apply for an in-college scholarship or maybe look at a different ROTC. Good luck

Those stats are impressive. I had read somewhere else that an SAT over 1850 and you were a lock, irregardless of all the other stuff. You need to start applying for other colleges and with your SAT and ACT scores alone, some will be throwing serious "merit aid" in your direction. If ROTC is truly a dream, then pick schools with that option.

If you call the phone number on the AFROTC scholarship site, they should be able to give you the details (Type & restrictions). Strangely, while my daughter applied for a nursing major, she was given a non-tech Type 7 that she can use for any non-tech majors. It is not limited to only nursing according to the rep at Maxwell.
I called yesterday afternoon but when I selected the option for my name, I got a recording that in the end just asked not even to leave a message.

We emailed and got the information. The reply was that our son was offered a type 2 in a technical field. I guess the finer details will come later. Does not seem to matter now. My son told me last night that he wants the CGA appointment. I'm so thrilled!. Hang in there those of you that have not heard anything yet. There will soon be another AFROTC type 2 opening up.

I sent an email in yesterday as well. Guess it's just a bit more waiting.

Oh well, back to shoveling the snow...

Great choice!
New London, CT is beautiful and you couldn't have a better career than the Coast Guard offers.
(We are former Coasties ourselves but sons want to join the Army-go figure.)

Got an email back a few minutes ago. 4-year Type 7 in a technical major tier.

Which I believe will convert to 3-year Type 2 if I go to Embry-Riddle, right?

I just sent an email back to confirm that, and also see if he could be more specific on the major (or if it's my choice of technical major, which would be cool).

Edit: This interesting scenario just popped into my head, but it's probably wrong. I'd like to run it by you guys to be sure though.

Type 7 covers in-state tuition, and the in-state tuition of ERAU is the same as out of state. Does that mean that Type 7 is basically a Type 1 and will pay for full tuition? I've been under the impression that because of the nature of ERAU that that wouldn't be the case (that it's not a "qualifying school"), but does anyone have information that can confirm that?

Congrats Eagle 1! Yep, I believe you can trade your Type 7 for a 3 year Type 2 and use it at ER. However ER is a private school and you cannot use a Type 7 at a private college....even in-state.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming that.

I believe ER offers money as an assurance to ROTC cadets on scholarship in general, and more for the first year of 3-year scholarship cadets, but I'm going to get in contact with them directly to see how that all works out.

Eagle 1 congrats....

My son also received a Type 7 four year for technical major scholarship (I confirmed that these are for any school and any technical major). His back up school is ERAU (first choice is USAFA). I spoke to both AFROTC and ERAU and they confirmed that you have the option to convert your type 7 to a 3 year type 2 for ERAU. That is $18k per year starting in year two.

Note that if you include ALL costs to ERAU, which is not cheap, it is $40k per year (for non-flying careers). so the $18k is barely 50% of the costs starting in year 2. The tuition part was about $28k per year. My son was accepted into ERAU in the Aerospace Engineering program with a $12k total scholarship ($3k per year). After speaking to ERAU admissions, they advised to "appeal" for a higher scholarship based on on the AF ROTC scholarship and other school offers that he received (i.e. he was also offered $70k total at another school). They said that they may bridge some of the gap between the scholarships and costs. They also said...do not do this appeal till after you receive your "financial package" which all schools uniformly send out in March.

Anyway, hope this is helpful.

That's very helpful, Blue Skies. ERAU is my daughter's second choice after AFA. She also got that 12,000 scholarship. We haven't heard from AFROTC yet because her interview wasn't completed in time. I am very nervous, however, after reading some of the posts in this thread.:frown:

Thanks for the info Blue. I also got $7000 a year from them already, so that's a bit of a help (and we'll see about outside scholarships too), but I plan to appeal for a higher scholarship as well.

Do you know when in March they send out that financial package?

By the way, back to the AFROTC scholarship - does anyone know how long until they mail out official letters? I know the website said "within the next few weeks," but I'm curious if there's a more specific timeframe.

Me too!! Now we have to wait another month!!

Letter

My son's status on the AFROTC application tracker informed him of his scholarship on Monday, Feb 8. He received his letter regarding the same on Wednesday Feb 10.

I was told on tuesday by Maxwell AFB that they mailed out the letters that day, Feb 9th so....about 2 to 3 days to get to you. I haven't received it yet, so should arrive by tomorrow.

On the financial packages from the Universities...no idea when in March...so I would expect 2nd or 3rd week.

Gosh, those are good stats!!!

Randy, I don't know where you are but this is what I would do:
(If you are from Texas) look into the Terry Scholarships--top qtr of your class is the basic requirement.
Talk to the Corps people. They have scholarships and maybe you can get through your fish year and get the 3-yr scholarship.
Check out your local A&M(or other college) club and the Houston Livestock Show (or equivalent).
Talk to your school guidance counselor--there are lots of little schollies. One elementary school here offers a scholly for their "grads".
Talk to your pastor/youth pastor--maybe he/she knows something.

Have you gotten admitted to your preferred college? :thumb:

Hang in there. It will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

Janet

I'm confused. If your son's Type 7 four year scholarship can be used "for any school and any technical major", why would you even consider trading one for a three year type 2?

My son found out today that his scholarship is a Type 7 scholarship for $9000 per year for four years...
