How did I not get AFROTC scholarship

Got it. So you confirmed that a Type 7 will pay $9000 per year at ANY college including private colleges?

That wasnt the case two years ago when I went through it. They said you could only take the Type-7 to a school where in-state tuition didnt exceed $9000. Even if it did exceed that much and you were willing to pick up the extra, it didnt matter. You had to convert to 3-year type 2.

I cant say if thats still the case though. Since these things are constantly changing.

a type 7 will pay up to instate tuition, but the student CAN NOT pay the difference to cover a more expensive school. Very few private schools (if any) match the instate tuition rate of their state schools...

the question of the type 7 is definition of "non-qualifying school". If the school offsets the difference and not the student would be the only option...

and nick4060...I assume that means you live in a state where the state school's tuition does not exceed $9000. Others have posted that their state school tuition does exceed that amount but I have not seen a specific state mentioned.

The instate tuition of state schools varies from school to school within the state. In Pennsylvania there are probably 10 "state" schools that each have different COAs. Which one would a private college have to match?

I think you may be correct about the issue being the definition of "non-qualifying school". I wonder what that actual definition is and how BlueSkies confirmed that her son could use his Type 7 four year scholarship "for any school and any technical major".

They told me that Embry Riddle was expensive and if we wanted to use our type 7 there we ought to convert it to a type 2 three year scholarship. She didn't say "must" convert it. In any case, why wouldn't you convert it?

My son also received a Type 7 four year for technical major scholarship (I confirmed that these are for any school and any technical major).

I can understand why someone would want to convert their Type 7 to a three year Type 2. I'm just trying to determine who confirmed with you that the Type 7 are for any school and any technical major. I'd like to speak to them.

It was the person for my alphabet group.... so for us it is:

Therrien, Marina M Civ USAF AETC AFROTC/RRUC [Marina.Therrien@MAXWELL.AF.MIL]

She is the one that has given us all the information up till now but I suggest that you write or call her only if she falls into your alphabet.

PS: no letter in mail today ...

Starting to hate the Air Force

My son's account at the website states he did not get an AFROTC scholarship. He has received an appointment to West Point, Army ROTC 4 years to Cornell, and is waiting for AFA. His stats are:

5th out of 550 class rank
3.9 unweighted out of 4
780 math, 720 verbal, 690 written
varsity soccer and lacrosse
nat'l honor society
many other things but will stop there

How does he get nothing from Air Force ROTC? It has been an interesting process. I hope all of you that are trying get something from somewhere. Your interest in serving our country is very much appreciated.

I don't get what happened during the last board either. An appt. to WP but no AFROTC....baffles the mind. Just what are they looking for???????????

Would be interesting to see the stats of the ones that did get a scholarship. I don't think they need as many technical students as before or else they are cutting costs and hoping kids love the idea of joining the military so much they will join the afrotc without a scholarship first.

Wow! Pretty amazing stats...again, I can only believe that either the way they were recommended in the interview report where your son may feel he did well but something he said told them that he was probably more interested in something else. That or they know about his other alternatives and don't believe he would actually take the AFROTC....I am just speculating.

Why would he want an AFROTC scholarship if he has the choice of an appt to West Point or 4 yrs at Cornell?

Strange things happen during this process....one of the beauties of it is that our kids usually end up where they are supposed to be. He's obviously a great fit for Army since he got into AROTC and WP.

@potential
I had similar stats with with the same end result... They just must be really hard pressed for funds...

Maybe he would prefer to serve in the Air Force and not the army?

AFROTC is more flexible as to the schools you can submit an application. For him it opens up a chance for MIT, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. He is interested in serving in either the Air Force or the Army, so that is not part of the equation.

We realize he is privledged to get what he has been offered, and he will decide soon, get a great education, and serve. This is a great place to vent a little, so thanks for the replies.

Potential Parent - did either you or he follow up with AF ROTC on his rejection?
I don't think you/he would be out of place to ask the question.

I don't want to speak for Potential Parent, but I know our reaction was just so stunned that I've been harboring a "Well, FINE!" attitude towards the AF.

If they're not interested in my kid, it's got to be a sign (I'm a big believer that things ultimately turn out the way that they need to turn out/"for the best") so we really aren't heartbroken (just mad lol) that he won't commit 4 years of his aerospace engineer-educated life to them after college.

Also, if it sounds like I'm 12 harboring a grudge against the teacher who doesn't like me... that's a little how I feel.

It is clear that the Air Force is downsizing. They probably are selecting far fewer scholarship winners from high school this year - who knows?

Surely, you all know that being rejected from an AF ROTC scholarship doesn't signify the end of an Air Force career. Your kids can still join AF ROTC and also try for a 3 year scholarship.
