How do candidates decide between USNA or NROTC?

My daughter did not sign a contract if that is what you're implying. Again, the university refused to even speak with me about the issue and in the end, my daughter did not want us to go to court over this. My sister (her aunt) is an attorney and did not recommend us filing suit over this, just to not pay it and let the issue work itself off of her credit file.

If that's the case, its simply bullying by ASU. I understand the decision not to fight ---I'm an attorney and would probably advise a paying client that its often not worth the fight. Some people would fight "as a matter of principle..." and my favorite advice to clients is that there is nothing an attorney likes more than a client with principle, ....and money !

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have a question and would love some thoughts. My DS was offered an appointment to USNA 2 weeks ago. It's his first choice and he was so excited he accepted it right away instead of waiting for the May 1 deadline. This past weekend, he found out he got accepted to his 2nd choice, Cal Maritime & an NROTC scholarship. He applied to back up unit schools and state universities as well.

I have read on the forum that it's good to keep Plan B etc.. and have read about some getting injured etc...and unable to go to USNA.

If he has already accepted the appointment to USNA...then is that NROTC scholarship automatically forfeited? He has not replied to NROTC or Cal Maritime yet. Can he still accept the NROTC scholarship and decline it later (the more permanent contract) if he already accepted the appointment to USNA? I have read that once you step foot on USNA (I-day), it's automatically forfeit...I've also read where people put a deposit on civilian school and wait until end of Plebe summer to be really sure that's what DS wants to do. But it's unclear if they still have the NROTC scholarship.

USNA is really where he wants to be. He's been in Sea Cadets for 4 years and very familiar with Navy culture and have gone to Recruit Training (2 weeks boot camp...like a mini plebe summer of sorts), and other Sea Cadet Advance training. So I don't believe he would consider changing his mind about not going. It's more of a matter of unseen life circumstances.

Thanks you

I do not have a guaranteed NROTC scholarship, but if I have to choose between USNA and NROTC I will go with USNA. This is purely based on I love the military way of life and I need discipline, something the normal university could not give me, even with NROTC. I have visited many colleges around my state and went on CVW to USNA in October and there is no doubt in my mind that if offered an appointment, I will accept immediately.

I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be in your position. However I will say this: if your goal is to be a Naval Officer, go with the most sure thing. At the end of the day a commission is a commission no matter how you get it. If your goal is to attend USNA, then you have answered your own question. When I was going through the process, I had to make the decision of whether or not I wanted to go to USNA or whether I just wanted to be an officer in the Navy. After a lot of thought, I decided that I just wanted to be a Naval Officer and it didn't matter to me how I got there. You can't go wrong with either choice, but make sure you know what you want. The world is your oyster. Good luck and congratulations on earning the NROTC scholarship.

DS had an accepted NROTC scholarship that he kept until Iday. BC one never knows what will happen (DS’s assigned roommate was not processed through Iday due to a reported and cleared injury not deemed adequately healed). And yes it is nulled when one reports.
