For us, it was simply by being sponsored by the local American Legion.
Pay the fee....$350?

Contact your school counselor to see if your school sponsors the program. If not, then contact your local American legion to see if you can be directly sponsored by them (or fund raise it).

I contacted my local American Legion Post before I went. They decided to Sponsor me, and everything just fail into place.

My school called me down one day and asked if I was interested and that they would recommend me to our local legion post. Like Temple17 it just fell into place and I'm heading later this summer! Try contacting your local legion and see if they have any money left to sponsor someone. Mention you want to attend an SA as well, the person that did my interview loved when I said that.

Our high school has an interview and application process, and they choose who to send. The students do not have to pay.
