I just learned that you have to do a basket ball throw on your knees, what are some ways I can prepare for that?

There are tons of threads on CFA suggestions here on SAF. Use the internal Search function or an external Google search with “www.serviceacademy.forums” in your search string.

In YouTube, search for CFA elements there, particularly Stew Smith, a former Navy SEAL, USNA grad and now fitness pro. Look at his website too for CFA elements.

Google is your friend.

WATCH THE VIDEOS...then go everyday to the gym and practice or buy a basketball and practice in your backyard. EVERY DAY. You can make a lot of progress in a short time but you have to watch the videos--some of which are in the saved threads on the USMA Forum. I think it is called something like 'Oh No, The Basketball Throw'--otherwise you can look on YouTube. It is a trick that you can learn but you have to practice--unless you are in a throwing sport. Kids who do discuss & shotput & basketball have a real leg up on the rest...When my oldest took the CFA during SLE at USMA in the summer of 2011, the kid next to him threw the ball and hit the wall at the back of the gym. (SHOTPUTTER!) My guy and his grader were like, "Yeah...we are just normal over here."

See the videos that CaptMJ has suggested, then practice, practice, practice...... then more practice.
My DD ( USNA 2025) started with a miserable 7-11 ft, but with regular practice, technique she was able to do 43+ in her CFA. So cannot stress more on this.

DS watched a number of the Stew Smith videos and practiced ALOT!!

Repetition and developing the correct form are the keys to success. Get someone to video you doing it the first couple of times you throw the ball. That gives you an opportunity to actually critique your own form. Search the many number of videos on YouTube that provide insight into the best form. Then go out every day and practice throwing a few times doing your best to stick to the form. Do not over do it each day as you will begin to break down your form as you get tired. Every two or three weeks, re-record yourself to see if you are progressing with the right form. Once you are comfortable that you have gotten as close as you can to mastering the form, go take the CFA. Your adrenaline the day of the test is usually good for a few extra feet on your throws.
