How do nominations work at NAPS?

I’m over the moon after getting appointed to NAPS ‘19, but the nomination process confuses me and I am concerned that I won’t be able to grab another nomination next year as my area is very competitive (NoVA). Can someone explain this process to me? It’s hard after this whole process not to be paranoid about worst case scenarios so some reassurance would also be helpful, haha

You will apply again to all nomination sources. At NAPS you will technically enlist. This will make you eligible for a Sec Nav nomination also. If you don’t secure a MOC Nom you will get a Sec Nav nomination. Pass all the requirements at NAPS, stay out of trouble and you will make it to the USNA.

Congrats & good luck at NAPS. Have only heard good things about NAPS.

In regards to his question. We have already drafted the nomination request letters as laid out in the parents forum on Facebook but when should we send these & somewhere I saw that we would need some kind of proof that these had been submitted. Postal proof of delivery? Our representatives aren’t known for responding to such requests. If someone happens to know, thanking you in advance.

Not sure what you are asking here.
What is a "nomination request letter"?
Applications for Nominations from Members of Congress (MOC) to Service Academies typically begin online (each MOC has a web page with a Service Academy Nomination page, which lays out the process they use).
If we're talking about the Class of 2023 here, MOCs won't be taking applications until late Summer or early Fall 2018.

As for proof of delivery, most MOCs will send you an EMail to confirm that they have received the application, along with future dates to prepare for interviews (if selected for an interview).
If they don't do that, candidates can wait a week or so, and call the MOC's office to confirm receipt of the application.
If you're concerned that it will get lost, I suppose that you could send it registered mail if you like.
A lot of MOCs will have a due date for these sometime in September or October and will make their Nominations in November or December.
There are different dates for all of them, so the candidate has to keep track!

A typical application for a SA Nomination may include;
1. A filled-out application form with a photo of the applicant
2. Two or three Recommendation Letters
3. An essay from the applicant ("Why I want to go to the Academy" sort of thing)

.

You can ask when you get to NAPS--but I would expect that simply keeping a copy of the submitted Nomination applications is sufficient. Who would go to the work of preparing the applications and not submit them ?

We have already drafted the nomination request letters as laid out in the parents forum on Facebook
. One word of caution -- be careful with what you read on Facebook (and this Forum as well). You should only rely on upon primary sources like the USNA Admissions website, and your MOC's own nomination policies. Some participants use their own experience as their basis of knowledge, and while well meaning, some things (particularly when dealing with MOC nomination processes) aren't necessarily the same. Caveat Emptor.

Sorry, figured this might cause some confusion for some. Just thought that perhaps someone had already had one of their kids go through Naps. Since MOC NOMs aren’t even open when they head off for this little adventure it’s NOT going to be the same ol’ thing. Believe it or not, we actually have completed the nomination process and got not one but 3. So yea got an idea how the typical thing works. Sorry for the confusion.

There is now a letter on your MC's USNA application portal addressing nomination requirements. It says that you must apply for all nomination sources you are eligible for and provide proof of application. It states a screenshot of online application or an email will suffice. Please check with all your MOCs' Academy nomination staff to find out exactly what you need to submit for your nomination. Our district Rep has a streamlined application procedure for Preppies, and most of what was submitted originally will stay in his file. His office has already sent a letter confirming he has applied for a nomination for next year. Also, the OP was concerned about receiving a nom from a competitive area, the letter in your portal addresses this issue as well, echoing what Navy Hoops stated wrt SECNAV noms.

I agree. Any online forum should only be considered as 'guidance', always refer to the official USNA and/or MOC websites as the factual source of current information. Far too many people provide conjecture, opinions or authoritative sounding advice which can be misleading. What may have been true last year or 5 years ago, may no longer be true. Each MOC runs their own NOM process, so be sure to look at their website for the latest information on how to apply for a NOM.

You've already applied for noms so you know what to do. The process is not really any different for NAPSters other than, if you don't secure a nom on your own, you will get a SecNav nom. USNA wants everyone at NAPS and Foundation to apply for noms b/c it gives them more flexibility. However, not getting one is no longer fatal -- one of the benefits of NAPS/Foundation.
