How does being a recruited athlete affect the admission board's decision? I have been in contact with one of the coaches and he mentioned an endorsement that he sends to the admissions board. Does anyone know any more information about this?

There are lots of previous threads on this. The answer is it depends. There are different levels of being recruited. ‘Blue chips’ tend to be the most highly sought after. A coach showing some interest and giving an endorsement could mean many things. Blue chip label is the highest and the lowest would be a coach saying they are interested but not pushing for you at admissions. An endorsement could help, but it’s hard to say.

Could you specify what a blue Chip is? I like on the west coast and the academy is paying for me to fly over and meet the coaches, the team and watch a meet
Thanks for the information!

A blue chip is a term to describe an athlete that a coach is willing to use one of his ‘I really want this kid’ options on. Some teams don’t get many and other teams get many. It sounds as if the coaches are extending you an official NCAA recruiting trip. That will be great to learn about USNA and shows the coaches have some great interest in you. Recruiting is a big game and puzzle for college sports. One minute you can be #1 on a coaches list and the next a reach recruit could commit and now their interest lowers. This is how the game works regardless of SA or not. You will really never know where you are on the list but an official visit is a good sign. If usna is where you want to be, then keep applying and preparing.

Getting an endorsement does help. My DS has committed for baseball and was initially told last summer that he would not be blue chipped as they felt his academic record would be competitive for admission, but would be endorsed by the program. I assumed that would mean a LOA....but he never received one. The coaches kept in contact thru the application process, Once his nomination interview was complete and he was medically cleared, he had a long conversation with the head coach, and the LOA was issued.
I know they were a little concerned with his ACT score and the writing score. Now just waiting for that nomination to come thru!

Questions, my son was offered a scholarship. He turned in his ACT scores in early October. In mid October he received a call offering him a scholarship. He was scheduled to do early signing, the day before he was to sign he got a call from his recruiter. Saying his scores were I little low. We immediately signed him up to retest. However his test date is in February can he still turn his test scores in after January 31 everything else has been completed?

Scholarship to another school? There are no scholarships to any of the academies, appointments are given. If he has an appointment he is done and just needs to accept. My understanding is that ALL of the application has to be completed by January 31st. This includes test scores. Also there is no "signing" for the academies. The LOI is a contract between an individual and school when money is given. I am also confused about this "recruiter". Is that his contact at USNA or a private entity?

If test scores do improve he may be eligible for NAPS or Foundation.

Do you mean a Foundation scholarship? NAPS?

He was scheduled to do early signing, the day before he was to sign he got a call from his recruiter.

Do you mean his Regional Director at USNA? His Blue & Gold Officer?'

However his test date is in February can he still turn his test scores in after January 31 everything else has been completed?

I believe USNA accepts scores after Jan. 31 for tests taken prior to that date (if that's when the scores are released). However, I don't believe that tests taken after Jan. 31 count for this year.

If your DS has been offered a Foundation scholarship, then there is no need to retake the ACT/SAT at this point. If you are talking about some other type of scholarship, there may be a "need" to retake the standardized tests, but the answer remains the same in that it is now too late.

I apologize for not knowing all the right terminology Scholarship vs Appointment.
What I do know is one of Navy’s football coaches came to his school in October and asked him if he would like to play for Navy. He said yes, and at that time he verbally committed. He had sent his test scores and GPA in before he was asked to play for Navy.
Here lays the problem he wasn’t told that is scores were low until December so the soonest he could test now is February 10th. If he would have been notified in October he could have tested in December or January. So from what I’m hearing is he’s going to be testing to late. I’m upset because I feel they the coaches dropped the ball on this. I’ve contacted other schools that wanted him and they have filed their spots. I apologize If it sounds like I’m venting. The coach said he would be contacting us this week. I need to know if there’s anything I could do say or ask. That could help. I thought that what NAPS was for kids like my son.

It's ok. It's just that we can better answer your question if we understand the facts. I've sent you a PM.

Recruiting is a fickle beast. I was just attempting to understand issue. You and your son believed it was "a done deal", unfortunately that isn't always how it works. Coaches change their priorities based on many factors. Like who is going to commit, who can get an appointment without support, who got an unexpected waiver /or failure from dodmerb, etc. I do empathize with your frustration, DD was a recruited athlete last year. It was a nerve wracking experience until the appointment arrived, followed by another 6 months of praying she wouldn't get injured.

My advice, take it or leave it, is to get your sons options. NAPS sounds like a great plan. There are also Foundation programs at private schools (although these sometimes cost money). They may offer one of these options in the phone call. Try to go into the conversation with an open mind and do some research on NAPS and Foundation program so you can ask questions. The coach might tell you to wait a bit longer and they will use a blue chip on him. If he IS interested in going to another school and not an academy, he should continue contacting those coaches. Things happen and kids change their minds, lose their spot, get injured, etc. It will all work out in the end.

Best of luck

The coaches dropped the ball ? BGO's don't get involved in with football recruits due to NCAA restrictions, but I certainly hope it is the candidate himself who is responsible for submitting his application and evaluating whether he is competitive for appointment ? What were DS son's ACT scores ? Do they fall within the published range for Admissions? If not, why wasn't he signed up to take ACT's again without waiting for the Coach to tell him too ? If DS is serious about attending USNA , he needs to be proactive and take care of himself.

If your son really wants to attend the Naval Academy and be a Naval Officer, a year at the prep school is the way to go. This is one of the mission's of the prep school.

We had a similar interaction with a coach a few years ago who just did not understand the process.

Please research all you can and have an open mind as said before.

It’s not about playing football. It’s about a lot more. Yes serving his Country the education and the opportunity after. Football is just a vessel to help him. He’s had a lot of other offers that he turned down.

Just my two cents.
  1. "I’m upset because I feel they the coaches dropped the ball on this." Please do not get on the coaches, this is detrimental to your son. Will you blame his superiors if there is a problem in the future? He needs to take responsibility for this situation and talk with the coaches.
  2. "verbally committed" and "Signing" At the service acadmies there is no signing and athletes from all over the country verbally commit the decide no that is not where I want to go and change their mind. At the service academies there are no scholarships.
  3. "Low scores and NAPS" If you son has low test scores and is a direct report he may struggle academically. Remember in addition to the academics he will be a varsity athlete. Naps is always an option and may be a good option for your son.

1. My son is 17 yrs old and yes it is up to the coaches to do their jobs.

2. Yes there is a signing. On February 7th athletes from all over the country will sign. Their national letter of intent. That includes those that intend on playing for the Academy.

3. Isn’t that the reason they have naps. Not everyone goes direct. My oldest is at USNA and had high test scores and he’s still struggling .

Thank you

Thank you[/QUOTE]

The service academies do not participate in the national letter of intent, this coming directly from a coach. They will allow you to commit and sign but it is mainly for media purposes

Nope.....Service academies are limited to 56 official visits before national signing day, the same as other FBS schools. They are, however, allowed another 14 visits after signing day, since service academies do not participate in the National Letter of Intent program.
