How does the prep school work?

Have you taken a look at the NAPS website, USNA website or even the prep school thread? They do a 2 week indoc (not sure on exact days, but it’s roughly two weeks) that is run my MIDN and they do get paid. NAPS appointees will actually sign enlistment papers and that is how they get paid and qualify for a SecNav Nom. It also counts as a year of service towards retirement.

So that would mean if I got into NAPS and then later got an appointment to USNA, after graduating I would only be required to serve 4 years?

Like do they have a thing like plebe summer? Do you still get monthly pay? Etc
.
It is not a 6 week indoc like Plebe summer …. NAPS indoc is 3 weeks long starting about July 22/23 this year.
.
We took our DD to NAPS this past April 4-6 (Fri-Sat) just so she can get her mind set and hit the ground running .... She shadowed another NAPSter (Friday April 5th) who happens to be from her/our HS from the prior year …. Our DD loves the place. She is ready to go now.
.
The School (Perry Hall) and Dorm (Ripley) sit right next to other …. Athletic field is adjacent to Ripley dorm …. It is in a Beautiful setting. The Program is impressive.
.
Newport is beautiful area too …. Cliff walk over near the Historic Mansions (Vanderbilts) is awesome too.
.
You get leave the Main Gate on weekends during liberty and go for some Picturesque Runs.

I think you are still required to serve 5 on AD after graduating from USNA.
.
Btw -- Think of NAPS as the 5 year USNA undergrad program, instead of the 4 year program …. Admissions has to value you a Lot to spend 5 years educating you.
.

Still required to serve 5 (assuming you don't go Nuke/Aviator/NFO), but if you decide to stick around until retirement (normally 20 years), you'll only have to do 19 years active duty (20 for normal - 1 year at NAPS = 19 AD years) to yield a retirement pension at your appropriate paygrade.

Don't forget for retirement, anyone joining the military is now under BRS and not the high-3. Also, I believe the one year at NAPS was added on AFTER 20 years...so at 20, it became 21 years.

Can you please elaborate? What is BRS and high 3?

Over the course of the last few decades, the military retirement benefit system and related calculations have been changed in law a few times. The BRS was implemented in Jan 2018. As with any of these, there are pros and cons. There will be briefs at the right times on this.

“High three” is based on the last 3 years of base pay. That system preceded BRS.

What a member is eligible for depends on what system they came in under, and for some, there were opt-in/out options.

I was fortunate enough to be on the straight 50% of base pay system as of last AD paycheck and years served. Equally, if I had gotten out before I was retirement eligible, I was not eligible for retirement pay of any kind, even if I had served a bit shy of 20 years. The opportunity to contribute to the military/Fed Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) came along later in my career. It works like civilian employee-contributing 401(k) plans.

BRS is a blended approach.

It is not something to worry about now or base decisions on.

Current NAPSter or AD can correct if things have changed, but NAPS candidates enlist in the Navy as E-1 and are in enlisted status while at NAPS. You get E-1 /E-2 pay while at NAPS. The year served also gets credited to your Service record. This can be significant, as you get a jump in pay a year earlier than your USNA peers. If you look at a military pay scale, it is based upon rank and time in service --I remember a more significant jump in pay than my classmates because the LTJG promotion and jump to over 2 years (maybe it was 3) occurred at the same time.
At the end of NAPS, and effecive upon I Day, you are discharged from the Navy (get a DD214) and then reappointed as a Midshipman. The one year also counts toward retirement.

Ditto on Newport- I'm not sure which town I like better, Newport or Annapolis, but they are close. My wife's family lives near Newport, so I make a point to get there whenever we visit.

Actually it’s enlistment to the Navy reserves. But things change all the time!

Anthony's Seafood meat market and Restaurant in Middletown (Newport) is the place for relaxed Eat …. After our visit this past Friday, we were instructed to go and eat there …. Twill work shirt, Jeans and Boots style restaurant …. You walk past the meat case while in Line, then order.
.
Can't beat $12 for a Tuna Steak sandwich platter.
.

I like Newport better in during the non-cold months. Cold months... nope.
.
The Seals frolicking out on the Rock Outcroppings there didn't seem to mind on Friday … We were told that they are there all Winter.
.
They'll be heading North soon. It's getting too hot.
.

Some truth there - my year in Newport was cold . The enlisted issue Peacoat didn't quite cut it.

You've answered my question on which is better -- Newport in the Summer, Annapolis Spring and Fall, and throw in Key West for the Winter, and I would be very happy ! (For the upcoming Plebes and families, you are about to find that Summer in Annapolis can be hot and humid !)

Also, I believe the one year at NAPS was added on AFTER 20 years...so at 20, it became 21 years.
Not true. The year is applied immediately for pay (and retirement) purposes upon graduation. Therefore, the day after graduation, the NAPS grad has about a year of additional service
compared to the Non-NAPS grads which will give earlier longevity pay increases for them and a chance to retire earlier.

Anthony's seafood has always been great and years ago only known by locals and few tourists. Much more popular now but still great food and prices. Atlantic Grille in Middletown near first beach is great for breakfast and lunch and since renovations now serves dinner also. Again, good prices and very large servings. Both places are casual. Two DD's attended High School in Newport and we have eaten in both places for over eight years they attended. Newport can be very cold and blustery in winter.

I am the Napster that was shadowed haha
- I have a thread answering questions about NAPS as I am here right now. We get a monthly E-1 pay, had a 3 week indoctrination period in July-August, and we have to still serve 5 years afterward. I enlisted in USN reserves in July and have begun my outprocessing toward becoming a MIDN as of a few weeks ago. Over the summer we are on leave without pay active duty, and we report for I Day ahead of time which is where we get discharged from enlisted service
