How does the USNA inform you of an appointment?

Just curious, how does the naval academy inform you of an appointment? By email or regular mail?

Before you get the big envelope(although its not exactly fat, just the large appointment certificate), your admissions status will update online. As soon as the status on the portal is updated to "Fully Qualified Offer of Appointment" you receive an automatically generated email from USNA admissions which will contain a letter congratulating you on your admission. I got the online notification 2.5-3 weeks before the physical appointment certificate came via snail mail.

It seems like there were various ways applicants were informed last year.
Some were first notified by their MOC, some by their BGO, some by portal update, and very few by the certificate in the mail. But, in general the process seems to be:
The Academy notifies your MOC of the appointment and gives them a few days to notify the candidate.
Then your portal is updated and the appointment certificate is mailed.

Thanks to all of you. This Forum is amazingly helpful to a parent who is going through this process for the first time.

Like 5Day and the others said, there are various ways kids find out.

In DS's case, he was called in the morning as he was walking into school by someone from the Academy Athletics Dept who gave him the 'details' and closed the call by saying to him 'try and act surprised when your Congressman calls you this afternoon'

The Congressman had actually made his two USNA appointments the week before and was surprised when he was informed that my DS was also receiving an Appointment and would be his his third Nominee this year with the (2) Girls he had selected. Congressman's staff called my wife (DW) later in the morning (I didn't answer my cell, I thought it was a spam caller) and told DW that he was in and that to expect a Call from the Congressman. She asked if DW and I could get him to be near a phone around 5 pm(?)

When DS got home from school, he pretended that he knew nothing and didn't let us know about getting his call ! DS later said that evening that it was hard to contain himself until the Congressman called about an hour later.

I can assure you, if it happens, the Parents, the Kid and the siblings will NEVER forget the DAY. It changes everyone's life; it was such an emotional experience. It takes about two weeks for it to sink in. His portal is updated two Days later and he got the USNA Appointment Certificate a week later. The actual BFE comes late March/early April with all of the real paperwork and orders to report.

Now, a year ago today, the DS was getting ready for the 2015 PA High School State Water Polo Championship and had yet to do any Interviews for his Nominations ! That's how quick the "Night and Day" the life change happens.

On the other hand, DS called a couple of hours ago to see if he could :wiggle:barrow :wiggle:the deposit money needed to hold a spot for him with others from his Company who are planning to go on one of the two-week(?) hard-core Backwoods Survival Course in the Yukon in June. (So I suppose there are somethings that NEVER Change !)

Murf,
That's a great story. I hope my family is lucky enough to have a similar one to tell. Best of luck to your DS on his trek. Cheers.

My daughter received a letter in the mail from the Senators office that they had selected her for a nomination. Then she received an email from the academy a few days later that she had an appointment (had an LOA letter already in hand).

I was wondering when you think that my DS might hear from admissions. In NH we don't hear about nominations until January. Interviews are next week. He is not going to be recruited for athletics. It is his first choice of schools and I feel anxious for him:)

I appreciate any feedback/

Same situation for my DD, MOC interviews aren't even until Dec so we're settling in for a long wait.

Son's portal says "Complete Pending Review". What, if anything, will he see between this and either the thin or big fat envelope?

For me, I was at Complete Pending Review until I received an LoA. It will stay that way until you get an appointment, an LoA or a rejection notifcation underneath your son's application status.

Most will see CPR until a decision is made. It is not uncommon to have MOC interviews in Dec. Some have several weekends of interviews and remember most boards even do remote ones for kids at prep school and in college. MOCs have until Jan 30th to submit their slates. Even if a candidate gets a Nom, most won't hear until Feb-March. They tend to come out in waves starting around that time. USNA commits to informing candidates by April 15th. LOAs are the exception not the norm. If a MOC used an unranked slate (most MOCs use this) they need to WCS the entire slate. So if applications aren't due for a few months, a final determination on a slate can't be made until then. Once again LOAs being an exception, they just need a Nom. USNA puts the puzzle piece together and moves things around as the class rounds out. This how multiple people in districts get Noms and why candidates shouldn't panic if someone locally gets an appointment, Nom or LOA. Where a candidate thinks their Nom is being charged can be totally different from where they actually end up being charged.

Thank you very much NavyHoops. Your post definitely helped me ease up a bit.
