How does UNG compare to others?

Perhaps because TAMU and VaTech are much larger universities in many aspects, they are not as closely aligned as norwich and citadel, but in terms of size, student body, civilians and cadets, etc. Norwich and Citadel are extremely similar. Almost mirror images, one in the north, one in the south. I've heard norwich has a tremendous alumni network in the northeast.
The numbers are almost exactly the same--(and, like the Citadel, Norwich also offers distance/online graduate degrees). My understanding is norwich has two student bodies: a corps of cadets and civilian students, and the interaction is also somewhat minimal… I doubt norwich civilian students do push-ups with the freshmen cadets! Seriously, what's not similar about this? And as a citadel 2nd year cadet mentioned earlier, citadel students DO occasionally share classes with citadel students who are not cadets… enough said! ;)
And once again, like VMI, Norwich, Citadel, -- TAMU and VaTech have a large number of commissioning opportunities. As far as UNG goes, it seems to have a great deal in common with norwich and citadel with the exception of army as the only option for commissioning source.

As you already know they only share classes with VETERAN students who are all former cadets or ex military. And there is very little similarity between The Citadel and the other civilian SMCs so why don't you just stop this ongoing classless bashing, its sad when the VMI crowd has to resort to such gutless tactics.

Stop loosing your bearing and get control of yourself. Nobody's bashing anything. When asked to compare UNG and when making educated comparisons, anyone with any sense can see certain schools have far more in common than others. That's fact.
Your previous statement about all-military programs was incorrect. Only one school is "all-military" and it's not your Alma Mater. If it upsets/hurts you that citadel has a great deal in common with norwich, that is your issue. I believe both norwich and citadel are outstanding schools. Don't know/care what your issue is, but let's not mislead people into thinking the citadel and VMI are alike when citadel is far more similar to norwich.
And please, cage the snarky/disparaging comments... there's no need for that here.

talk about the pot calling the kettle black, but then again its mind over matter. You are a champion of disinformation and propaganda.

Norwich

950 Cadets
1100 civilian day students

The Citadel

2250 Cadets
60 Active Duty day students
40 Veteran day students
120 civilian night students

kindly explain how they are similar.

Alright folks- a general warning that won't be repeated. This thread has been thoroughly hijacked by individuals intent on posting about each other as well as subtle digs at each other's schools. These are supposed to be friendly rivalries- and on this forum they will remain that way. If you don't understand that you are invited to remain silent because all of that Alumni sitting at the bar junk is not welcome. In short- Knock it off and if you can not talk knowledgably and factually about the OP's question STAY OFF this thread. I have no interest in locking down threads, but if you can not act appropriately - I will act to clean up the thread as well as those contributing to it's demise.
So proceed accordingly.

+1 bruno! Thanks:thumb:

My DS is a second semester freshman at UNG and loves it. He is a contracted cadet with a 4 year AROTC scholarship, and turned down scholarship offers from Citadel and VMI in favor of UNG (not to disparage either of those fine schools, he just felt UNG was right for him).

In terms of comparing UNG to the other SMCs, I'd say it is similar to TAMU and Virginia Tech in the sense that it has a Corps that is part of a larger civilian school. UNG's overall student population and Corps is smaller than either of those two however, with 800 Corps members out of 6 to 7,000 total students at the Dahlonega campus, so it compares somewhat to Norwich as well (note that UNG has three other campuses now, with a total student population of around 15,000, though the Corps only exists in Dahlonega). The all Army focus is of course another distinctive, which seems to benefit UNG cadets in preparing for and scoring well at LDAC, etc.

The Citadel and VMI are further down the spectrum in terms of being exclusively (in the case of VMI) or almost exclusively (in the case of Citadel) military schools.

Hope that helps. As others have mentioned, take advantage of any opportunity to visit the schools themselves. This helped my DS make up his mind in favor of UNG.

I graduated from Virginia Tech with a civil engineering degree in 1990 and my son will attend UNG in the fall as a freshman to major in business. He's currently deliberating about whether to join the Corps or not. He's interested in a career as a special agent in the FBI and I'm arguing the benefits of the Corps of Cadets as a leadership development program, even if he decides not to join the military. It will give him options, teach him more about leadership, and make him a more attractive candidate for the FBI. Plus, given his personality and values, I really think the Corps would suit him. UNG was his first choice of schools. At this time, he's leaning away from joining the corps his freshman year, because he's not sure whether he can juggle the Corps demands and his academic responsibilities. He'll revisit the Corps his sophomore year.

Given that, we live in Georgia, and have never heard a bad comment about the University of North Georgia's academic program. I don't believe you can go wrong at either university from an academic or military program standpoint. However, UNG does not have some majors, such as engineering and architecture, that VT does. It's graduate program is also limited and mostly online, which might not be a big deal depending on your circumstances.

Both are great schools with deep military traditions.

My son attended UNG this past year. He loved everything about the school and the corps. He participated in a very bad a@@ corps group as well. He would have been very happy to finish his education and later commission from UNG, but West Point was his dream and he was accepted for c/o 2019. I cannot say enough good things about the UNG experience.

One slight correction here: The only school with an "all-military aspect" is VMI.

Dude give it a break.... don't you get tired of this line. I honestly do think EL Cid is beginning to mainstream regardless of what I think. They did not ask my opinion imagine that :) But .... your infatuation with the matter is rather, well you know!!! I sat in the stands this weekend and sadly you were on my mind with your constant barrage of this comment as I counted the 30 some odd veterans who were receiving their diplomas with the 450 plus Corp members. I'll pull the program if you wish and count. But I assure you it does not distract from "The Citadel" full military experience.

Sorry back on the subject, I do not mean to hi-jack, if need be let the above poster open his on thread on the subject and see who replies :)

As far as AD slots I think we all on here know things are a changing regardless of being at a SMC or not. All it takes is a stroke of the old pen so to speak and the right folks in agreement (the right votes) and that may change mid-stream...right??? All I am saying is times are a changing.

Frair also contact Sgt. Lee on here, as he has also done some intensive research into NG and A&M. You may be able to compare notes on NG. The Citadel not allowing In-State for those that plan to serve is a bummer. Since the school is absolutely a majority Corp (not ROTC Contracts etc but SMC Corp of Cadets), I would have no idea how they would implement this. I am sure if there was a will there could be a way.

Clueless,

You are replying to a post from well over a year ago. I think the issue is in the past.

Sorry I picked up the post from the top of the list because two new post were posted too it unless I do not understand the dating system. But yes the one I quoted was over a year old and I did not pick up on the date since the post had been moved to the top......

I happened to observe UNG's performance in several Sandhurst events this year, and they were solid. Right in there with the bigger schools, and had podium finish for the ROTC category if I recall.

Its not Citadel or VMI, nor does it try to be. But it has a long history, is a decent school in its own right. And a strong MS program as far as I can tell.

Posting this from Oregon and my DS seems very drawn to UNG as an AROTC candidate. He's also looking at Citadel, Norwich, VMI, TAMU as well. The staff at UNG have been very responsive and from a distance, the program looks impressive. I won't deny, the in-state tuition is also very appealing if he is unable to land a scholarship. I suspect he'll fare ok securing a 2-3 yr. scholarship but again, the non-scholarship financial aspect is attractive. I guess here's my question - we plan on having our DS go for an overnight visit or leadership weekend to experience it for himself (as well as other schools in time). My beloved spouse seems to have a slightly "less favorable" opinion of UNG as it is less known in our neck of the woods. Most if not all have heard of the Citadel, VMI, TAMU as you can understand. This is not a negative on UNG so please do not take it that way. What I am really looking for is any candid feedback on the cadet program at UNG and what the reality is when compared to the other SMC's. If this is addressed on a different thread, please point me in that direction. FYI - my DS is 3.5GPA (honors), 1200 SAT (math/ CR), 3yrs JROTC, 3 letter varsity sport, class officer, significant community service. Appreciate it and thanks all.

My DS is a Sophomore at NGU, should you have any questions I can be reached at 864.978.1852. Our DS is most impressed with his experience at NGU. I would recommend NGU to all whom are in search of a first class education and a Corps of Cadets second to none.

Wow, "Clueless"--you posting on something that's over a year old AND admitting to having me on your mind at a Citadel graduation... it's tough, but I'll let that slow, easy pitch go... without swinging!
However, in the interest of fact-based discussions (please check the website on this), after you watched your ceremony (and thought of me ;) ), another ceremony was held by the Citadel in which nearly 400 civilian Citadel students graduated with both bachelor and master degrees. Bottom line, (and as YOU previously posted) this is a great deal more than "a small handful" of civilian students or a small "diversifying" of the student body, as some would have folks on this forum believe... Go back and take a look at all the false data and wrong numbers certain members (some of whom have been banned from this forum) previously posted...
In the end, Texas A&M, Norwich, Citadel, North Georgia all have proud (and outstanding) cadets, proud traditions, and outstanding civilian students who are equally proud of their school.
So, to clarify--I'm not school bashing here--just pointing out differences... and next time, Dude, just let it go. Isn't this a sub-forum about UNG, anyway?!!

Yes I did post on a thread over a year old... as someone else refreshed the post and I did not catch it. Stealth has already chastised me in an indirect way :) And yes it is a UNG subthread but I was responding to your over a year old comment in reply 12. And I basically think you expresses the same sentiment in a more recent athlete coach thread if I am not wrong?

Yea and I am very aware there was a grad school graduation later that eve. I have opinions on that too but this old thread about UNG is not the place. Yes and I found it quite hilarious ( the finding it sad part was satire) as I saw a few not in Corp uniforms accept a diploma and my sister asks why they were not in uniform. At that moment your comments crossed my mind and I made a count :)

I assure you I am not school bashing... all SMC's great schools and everyone should be proud of any DD or DS that persevered through the program! And the same for other non-SMC Cadets!

Not sure you can hit a slow pith anyway.... It is called a change-up ;) Take Care...
