How Helpful are SA Career Conferences for Senior Officers or Aviators?

We're talking about my husband possibly retiring in a few years or staying in another few years after that. Whenever it's time to retire, we wonder if it's really worth a trip to the SACC or if there are other "goldmines" for jobs of similar pay we should be aware of.

SACC is worthwhile as is "Military MOJO". I'd also recommend hitting up some of the other firms that specialize in Military Officers like Lucas.

There are enormous numbers of resources available these days for transitioning military, including senior officers, both official and unofficial. Most of the ones I note should pop up in Google.

I now consult with several non-profits in this field and do volunteer mentoring with two of them. I am currently coaching 3 O-5s and two O-6s 1-2 years out from retirement.

Off top of head:

~ Networking, networking, networking

~ Developing a strong LinkedIn profile and taking advantage of their many resources and articles on military transition. This is also a great way to find former shipmates, colleagues, SA grads who work st companies of interest. Pro tip: on laptop, log into LinkedIn, use advanced search, enter company of interest, and in school, enter any of the service academies. Or, put “Navy” as a past company, along with current company, such as Grumman. Transitioning military get a free year of premium level LinkedIn.

~ SACC - great resource for SA grads for meeting recruiters at company tables, many of whom are SA grads

~ Military MoJo, for degreed veterans

~ Becoming a paid member of MOAA, to use their Career Transition Center online (resume review, job bank, webinars on various aspects of career transition)

~ Corporate Gray - started by a WP retired colonel, excellent free transition guide, job bank, career events

~ Research Soldier for Life courses at Army bases, or FFSC (or latest name) at Navy, or AF transition center, for course on USAJOBS tips and tricks, and other transition-related courses

~ Veterans Ascend

~ Centurion Military Alliance

~ Leader Transition Institute

~ Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF)

~ Find out if Navy has contracted for a Ruehlin Seminar in your area. It’s for senior officers.

~ Veterati

~ eMentor

~ Hiring Our Heroes

~ And, Afterburner, not primarily a career transition resource, but a cool place to work [emoji41], but does have career transition outreach

Much will depend on desired career field and geographic area.

Oh - and American Corporate Partners, they are excellent. Great for active mentorship with someone who has already transitioned.

If in the DFW area, Staubach started a non-profit called Allies in Service. They assist transitioning service members and spouses. I volunteered with them for a day this fall, seems like an outstanding resource.

SACC is a great stop. It’s a good networking event that often offers work shops. Lots of grads who even come back to the event working their company booths. It is a large event that will get him exposure to tons of companies, networking and overall ability to judge what is out there. It’s also a comfortable event for someone who has maybe never done this before. It’s a bunch of SA grads transitioning at a variety of points in their careers, you are all in it together.
