i am currently a junior looking to attend the merchant marine academy after highschool. Im keeping my grades up (had a 3.5 gpa at the end of last year, but my grades have been better this year so it is most likely higher) recieving a few leadership positions (co captain of our schools debate team, and will be entering the head admin position in my njrotc unit.) and have kept up my community service (will have over 200 hours by the time i apply. The only thing is that i have not partcipated in school athletics. Im on my jrotc units orienteering team (was actually going to be named captain before this admin position), but i dont know if they count that as a school sport. ive played soccer through a club league for a number of years. will not having much athletics hurt my chances? Thanks.

Not entirely sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that orienteering would count some, and I'm almost entirely certain that they count club/intramural sports, so if you've been playing soccer for a while you'll probably be okay. If you're still worried, than see if you can fit a school sport in this spring or next year.

Hope this helps!

A sport can be very important, because it shows leadership, following orders and gets you in shape physically and mentally. Three years ago my DS applied to two SA's. He was called by an ALO, who asked him are you doing any sports. He response was, I do strength and conditioning, for a phys ed class. The ALO asked the question again, my DS said I can run track, which he did and quite frankly wasn't very good, at it. He hated it. I not sure if they care, if you are really good or not. I think it is important that you do. Besides, it can't hurt you, it can only help. Hope this helped, best of luck.

Saul our son was not involved in sports throughout his entire HS career, outside of the PE classes which were mandatory. He did maintain his own physical health. And he did find important school activities which he was committed to throughout HS. His leadership roles came from being heavily involved in scouting. He was/is an Eagle Scout. He was a leader in the theater department at school, participated in varying community service projects through different dept at school and through our church, was on Student Council. Schools are looking for very well rounded individuals with long term commitment. If you are an Eagle Scout, that counts for leadership in sports, for all the Academies. Best wishes on your endeavors.

Saul they are looking for well rounded candidates. Look up the CFA and see what is required joing a sport (like track, cross country or martial arts) may help you train. This way you can have all bases covered. Plan a visit to KP and best of luck; be sure to post any other questions. The process can be long and confusing and the boards are very helpful.
