How likely am I to earn AFROTC scholarship?

I'm a HS senior. GPA 3.6, SAT 1340, ACT 30. Class ranking in top 25%. Planning on majoring in mechanical engineering. (Possible minor in physics?) Have taken chemistry, biology, 4 years of engineering electives, 3 years if physics, and taking AP calc now, . How likely am I to earn a scholarship? Is there a need/shortage for mechanical engineers or physicists in AF?

There’s probably always going to be a need for engineers in any of the services. As far as your chances, no one can really tell you for sure. Although I will say that I had stats similar to yours when I applied for an AFROTC scholarship and I was not selected. Nonetheless I ended up getting an in-college scholarship from AFROTC later on while I was studying civil engineering. Also just something to think about, but if you’re going to study ME in school I would recommend focusing on that degree and not trying to obtain a minor or anything like that. ME is a very complicated field (one of the most technical of all the engineering fields), so trying to minor in physics as well might be a little much. There’s nothing wrong with challenging yourself, just try to keep it all in perspective. Good luck!

DS's stats were actually higher than yours and was also looking to major in engineering. He did not receive an AFROTC scholarship but was fortunate enough to be offered a 4 year AROTC scholarship. Keep your options open!

Your academic stats are in line with my son, who did get a 4 year on the last AFROTC board last year (Type 7, tech major). What is your leadership, (varsity) sports, organizations, honors, and PFA? All these scholarships are whole-person evaluations and will be decided on what meets the needs of the service at the time. You are really not competing for a scholarship - you are applying for a job.

My DS has a 4.7 weighted gpa, super scored a 36, dual varsity athlete, president of NHS, SNHS, Cadet Squadron Commander CAP, etc Aerospace Engineer Major and got a Type 7. Not sure what it takes for a Type 2 or 1.

Just for some clarification.
1. AFROTC does not superscore. It is best sitting.
2. They do not use a gpa over 4.5. Thus, if your school uses a 5.0 or 6.0 for AP/IB classes, than they will use their algorithm to bring in line with their system.
3. Anything you do your senior year is not considered. IE if you become football captain your senior yr it does not count.
4. Your class rank does matter, but it is also placed in context. For example, if your class rank is 25%, but 50% of your classmates go to Ivy league colleges, than that rank is going to look better than if you were top 25%, but nobody goes Ivy.

Good luck.

My son was set up (meaning all the qualifications/stats) to go into the USCGA and got his rejection on the last batch of decisions. He also tried to obtain a NROTC scholarship and was also turned down.......So he went to Plan B mid senior year of high school.

Accepted to a major University with a major in Mechanical Engineering (minor in Aerospace Studies) and went into the AFROTC freshman year. Joined their Honor Guard, received an award at the end of the year with a $250.00 scholarship, Volunteered for 4 Freshman Orientations this past summer for recruitment, etc. This past October, he contracted and received the Commander's Type 1 Scholarship and it was an honor. Because of being a STEM major, he is on a 5 year plan, so his Type 1 will cover the 4 years and we (his parents) had to cover freshman year.
