Hi guys, I have just submitted my SLE application and i'm curious what my odds would be like. I am an Eagle Scout, have a job, am part of my local teen council SAT combines of 1170 PSAT of 1110 have done Science Olympiad and I do running outside of school. Thanks guys

StixTheNerd, I wish you luck..... there are many on here who applied the first week SLE opened and still haven't heard anything. The chances of you getting selected are 50/50. There are just to many variables to make a real determination - unless you are from the most remote area of Alaska and nobody else from the area applied and the Academy needed to fill that geographic criteria. If that is the case, it's still 50/50.

West Point has a rolling admission for SLE; hence, if you just applied, even with high SAT and GPA, it's going to be 50/50 because of the time frame you submitted your application. Nevertheless, non-admittance to SLE does not deter your chances of getting into West Point. My DD applied first week of Feb 2016 and was not admitted to SLE. Lesson learned: she applied immediately once her portal opened in July and first week of August, she received an LOA. Continue to update your scores and activities. Finish your 4 essays before you portal opens. Prepare for CFA. Stay healthy. Talk to your math/physics/chem/English teachers and counselor regarding the SOE. Since DD did not get in to USMA's SLE, she applied and attended USCGA's AIM program (similar to SLE). Good luck!

Thank you for the good advice on starting early. How do you know what the topics are for the 4 essays before the portal opens? DS applied for SLE (declined 3/16) FFR said most likely would not get accepted to SLE because of our close proximity to USMA. But now his portal says Initial Evaluation Pending and the initial would not be completed prior to July 1, 2017 for the class of 2022. I am assuming that on July 1 the portal will open up for more documents to be added at that time and before the initial evaluation? Thanks for the help.

@rbp67 I'm curious how you knew the 4 essays beforehand as well. DS also applied to SLE back in Jan but still hasn't heard and SLE status says "Pending" and DS portal also says "Initial Evaluation Pending and the initial would not be completed prior to July 1, 2017 for the class of 2022". We also live within driving distance to USMA, so now hearing it's a recruiting tool- he's not as bothered by it. He did get accepted to NASS and Boys State, but I know he wants to starting jumping on his essays and MOCs nomination process. Thx for any advice or guidance!

A google search comes up with the prompts. If you are applying to USNA or USAFA, once you reach a certain point in the app, typically 50%, DODMERB is initiated. It's advantageous to get your medical early to give more time for waivers if needed. Son had his exam on 8/1, surgery on 8/3 and still wasn't formally DQ until 3rd week of September when he was at a CVW at USNA. He received a waiver for shoulder surgery DQ on 10/18 from USMA but USNA waited until end of January.

Even if you are not selected, DO NOT fret! I was not accepted into SLE, I did attend NASS, but I am heading to USMAPS this july so you absolutely never know with SLE.

Honestly, no one on here can tell you your 'chances' to get chosen for SLE. Each SA has a program like SLE and they are partly a recruiting effort to create awareness among h.s. students who might not have otherwise considered an SA of the opportunity available. Some attend and immediately recognize the military is not for them. Getting chosen (or not) for SLE has no impact on your potential to get an appointment.
