My DS was awarded a 4 year ROTC scholarship. He accepted to VA Tech by the March 8th deadline understanding that he could transfer if needed. He has narrowed his final decision to: U of Michigan, RPI, Purdue, VA Tech. He has heard from all schools except U of MI, the notification date for U of Michigan could be as late as April 15th. All schools require commitment by May 1st.

My question, how long does it take to transfer an ROTC scholarship from one school to another? I'd prefer to complete the ROTC scholarship transfer prior to acceptance at the school on May 1st. Thanks in advance for your guidance.

It cold take weeks. It all depends on how you submit the request and how busy the scholarship folks at Cadet Command are. Sooner is better for submitting your request. Not sure why this late in the game there are still 4 schools on your list. Cadet Command will work with you, but at some point your son needs to decide and you need to request the transfer if VT is not the school.

On the Navy side, it can take a day to a few weeks.
If the school has plenty of space, a day. No space, the need to wait for the dust to settle.

Thank you for the insight regarding timing. I greatly appreciate all the information you both provide across the multitude of queries on the board; very, very helpful as a first time ROTC parent.

I expect he will have his decision, or final sorting order, before the end of March. If University of Michigan is his #1 then we will have to wait to transfer until we find out if he gets in and hope that we can transfer in time.

My DS asked for his AROTC scholarship transfer to his school of choice over 2 weeks ago and we still haven’t heard from CC. Hopefully we will hear soon. Will keep you posted.

Last year, my ROTC scholarship took 24 hours to process. Best of luck!!

(And RPI is the best!!)

DD is at RPI today doing a tour and interacting with the NROTC! She just called and said she really liked it there. So another keeper college to add to the list of top contenders. I don't know how she's going to narrow it down!

Was his transfer request to one of the other 2 schools he was originally offered the scholarship to, or to a school that was not on his original list?

To a school that was on his original list of 7 but not on his list of 4 scholarship choices. It involved him changing his major as well
