How many classes do cadets take at a time?

I know most colleges have students take 4/semester, but I know I read in the USNA forum that people often take more. What's a normal course load at USAFA?
Also: I've read all the website drop downs and am still a little confused. What is a "semester hour" of course work?

I'm taking 6 this semester + boxing which is what a lot of my friends have as well. Thats around 19 credit hours
Most Cadets and MIDN will be taking about 18 hours per semester (this will vary slightly). Most courses are 3 credit hours, some with a Lab are 4 hrs. Per Wikipedia: A semester credit hour (SCH) is the amount of credit a student earns for successful completion of one contact hour and two preparation hours per week for a semester. One semester hour equals 15-16 contact hours per semester, regardless of the duration of the course. This makes for a busy schedule, and does not include military training, room inspections, marching, sports, waiting in lines, doing laundry, standing watch, etc. Pressure with a purpose.

My DS has 7 this semester + the swimming/water survival combo that lasts 2/3 of the semester.

It's not uncommon for C3C's and C2C's to carry 19-22 hours.

4?
I thought most new aged degrees were designed around 8 semesters of 5 classes each. 120 hrs.

To our OP: don't confuse the 4 courses at civilian college with SAs.

The 4 (or 12 semester hours) you are referring to is often the minimum hours to be a full time student, the minimum hours to be considered for the Dean's list or the hours at which you are paying the maximum tuition and any hours over that are not charged extra. For many colleges, there are higher requirements, such as 15 semester or 30/year to keep a scholarship, and to graduate on time. Depending on major, a civilian college may only require 120 hours, but for STEM is usually much higher.

For USAFA, skim the Core curriculum's suggested course sequences, Chapter 9 pages 110-234 Listing by Major - don't read them all! Just scroll through and look at the yellow highlights for this purpose - and you will see that most majors require 140-144 hours, or about 17.5-18 hours per semester, excluding if you want to add any other courses, double major or add a minor. It also excludes any courses you validate, and there are nuances for scheduling/order/sections for specific groups like IC athlete schedules and Academy Scholars, but the core curriculum and the suggested course sequences give you a good guideline.

...
I dont know how true that is anymore. At my state u alma mater, my 30 year old bs degree took close to 140. That same degree today is 120.
Electrical engineering is 122. It was 140 back then as well.

I believe the govt pressure and usnwr rankings for graduation rates have changed these.

Wow! I think you are right! I assumed it was still much higher, but a quick look at my older DD's State U shows 120 hours for various Engineering majors, similar to what your search showed! I am surprised! Really surprised! Across the board, nearly all are 120!

Most state universities have a mandate to get more students graduating in 4 or 5 years (compared to the more typical 5-7 years). Hence, they cannot require more than 130-135 credit hours to graduate. I’m on curriculum advisory boards for two state engineering schools and this is a real problem for engineering departments. When I got my BS in engineering during the Devonian, I graduated with 169 credits. Times have changed.

I have definitely grown cynical about the college industry. It seems they are more worried about their numbers than what actual education they provide. And with the skyrocketing prices and push for freebies, it will only get worse.

My school was reducing PE requirements from 4 hrs to 2 hrs while I was there. The PE instructors were asking students to sign a petition to drop the credit hours from 1 to 0.5 per each one, so it would still require 4 classes. Even us college kids could do that math. My BS degree then required 8 hours each of Chem, Physics, Bio. Now the same major just requires 8 hrs total of chosen science.

I guess every few years another block of requirements fell to get folks graduated in 8 semesters.

Another reason to appreciate the old-school education the SA's provide.

Also to OP: Generally you would go to a class for 2.5-3 hrs a week for a college course. 50-60 minutes MWF or 75-90 Tu-Th. Pretty much all History, English, Business, etc classes follow this route. They will be listed as 3hrs for semester.

Some classes like Calc may be 4, but they required a 4th (or 5th) day of week for classes. Classes with labs (Chem, Physics, Bio, etc) will generally have a separate hr lab class each week and also be 4hrs for semester.

Some Intro or shorter topic courses may also only meet half semester or 1 or 2 of 3 MWF days, etc and be 1 or 2 hrs. PEs, College 101 ( the typical Freshman 'How to Succeed at College' Course), etc. are mixed in here.

I don't know about the other SA's but Navy's typical degree has about 140 Credits by graduation. Thats a full load.

SA students are full time, professional students who are paid (except USMMA) to focus on academics. As a result, more is asked and expected of you. It is my understanding most colleges do not want you taking more than 18 credit hours per semester, whereas a SA will not allow you to take less. I graduated with 168 and across 8 semesters, that would average 21 per semester. The 4* (freshman) year is typically your easiest academically (~19hrs/semester) with a peak during the 2nd and 3rd years (~24hrs/semester).

True. 15 is a full schedule at State U and permission must be obtained to do 18 hours or more in lots of schools.

My university starts classes today, I'm on in 10 mins. Most of my students are engineers or Computer Science and are doing 15 credits. Its often 5 courses and most meet twice a week for an hour and a half per session. When I went to Navy, I graduated with 145 credits with no credits applied for Phys Ed or lots of military stuff like drill. The 145 credits were all for actual classes.

COVID at USNA has thrown a monkey wrench into the ability to accommodate full schedules for all mids. They can’t find more than 14 credits for my DS this semester and he is significantly “understimulated”. Never thought I’d ever hear about how much downtime a mid has. Hope this is the last semester of this.

Not good.
