How much does getting ROTC help with the admission process?

As with all things, there are exceptions to the rule, but yes having an ROTC scholarship does help with the admission process.
How much depends on the school and the unit, or more specifically the person at the unit that works with admissions.
I would wager Clarksonarmy has the cell number of each the admission officers at the schools in his detachment. He is an example of a proactive recruiting officer.
He is a tireless in his effort to fill billets with qualified candidates. Not all recruiting officers are as passionate about their jobs.
The other thing to remember is the qualities and accomplishments that make you competitive for an ROTC scholarship are the things elite colleges and universities are looking for to matriculate into the next freshman class.
I would argue that any AFTROC type 1 scholarship recipients would be likely to receive offers of admission from any elite university with or without a "tap" from ROTC.

There is some difference in the way admissions looks at an ROTC scholarship. Some want to know that the scholarship is assigned to their institution. Do you roll the dice and assign or request your scholarship (obviously Navy and Army) to Harvard knowing it is a long shot? or do you ask to assign it to a safer school and work with the recruiter at Harvard to inform them you will transfer your scholarship if admitted? We could start another thread on that topic.
