How much information do MOC's have?

@MOC5th I too have a question. What is "potential" and "status" for USAFA and USMA?

  • The Potential column ranges from "risk, competitive, qualified, undetermined, disqualified, admissible, candidate withdrawn, usma closed, accepted, declined, offered, usma screen" USMA closed means the person didn't complete their application by the deadline. USMA screen means it was closed by the USMA for "lack of quality".
  • The Status column has your CFA (candidate fitness assessment) status, med board status, academic status, and the date you started your application.
    • CFA status will say, "mailout sent, tested, disqualified, unknown, qualified"
    • MED status will say, "no action, requested waiver, qualified, disqualified, scheduled"
    • ACAD status will say, "unresolved, qualified, disqualified"

Do you have any insight as to the difference between "admissible" and "competitive"? Do most admissible candidates receive an appointment if they are 3Q?

This is a quote from the website:
ACCEPTED: Accepted offer of admission
QUALIFIED: Fully qualified, but not offered admission
ADMISSIBLE: If nominated and qualified, should get offer of admission
RISK: Standardized test scores need improvement
COMPETITIVE: If nominated and qualified, subject to type of nomination, could get offer
UNDETERMINED: Insufficient information
DECLINED: Declined an offer of admission
USMA CLOSED FILE: File closed for lack of completeness
DISQUALIFIED: Not qualified (academic, medical or CFA)
USMA SCREEN: File closed for lack of quality
OFFERED: Offered admission
CANDIDATE WITHDRAW: Candidate requested that file be closed

@MOC5th Have you seen any trends on the number of candidates applying to the different academies?
My apologies for the delayed response. We don't get data from the academies beyond what they publish on their websites or announce over the summer about their incoming class. From my experience, every district has its own internal trends that are caused by location (nearness to an academy as well as nearness to a military base), veteran community, JROTC programs in the district, etc.

What does MOC stand for?

Member of Congress.

If you are just starting out on this journey, your acronym vocabulary will expand exponentially.

Head on over to the Community Info forum to find the Acronym List.

Read Stickies at the top of forums before you start to post - you might find the answer.

Take advantage of the Search function. Many of the same questions are asked every year, and often you can get quickly up to speed on a topic.

This is FASCINATING.

@MOC5th, I’m curious how having all this information influences your decisions. IOW, is it peripheral? Does it guide the information you seek from an applicant during an interview? Understandably a MOC will want to nominate candidates that will be appointed. This information you have access to seems to assist with that.

Thank you for giving us a peek into this process from the MOC point of view. Super interesting!

@MOC5th For USAFA, can the MOC office see if the candidate is a reapplicant? For test scores, can you see all scores or the superscore?

For USAFA & Naval Academy applicants-no we can't see that someone is a reapplicant in our portal. The only indication in the portal would be if the status is that they are currently attending the prep school. However, we would have this knowledge if a copy of last year's list of candidates was printed and saved or they applied for a nomination in the previous year and we have their old file. The West Point portal does have a section for viewing 2023 applicants within the site.

Scores wise we only see one set of scores and they are your super scores. If they are self-reported scores vs. officially submitted we do see an asterisk next to the scores to indicate they are unofficial.

Thank you for the insight. Our DS has one done and 2 more interviews to go.

You will likely get 535 different answers to this question, but we view the information as supplemental to what the applicant gives us directly. When nominations are being determined most of the columns of information are undetermined or empty due to the applicant not completing their academy application yet. Looking at our portals and counting them roughly 65% of the applicants have "undetermined" on their status presently, which isn't very helpful to us. We could wait until this information fills in, but we like to get the nominations completed prior to the holidays when possible. However, the indication of who has received letters of encouragement from West Point is very helpful in knowing who they are pursuing.

And for USAFA you see points or just the "average, above average, etc"??

So should a candidate let an interview panel know they are done with 4 SA applications, and they are Medically qualified? Curious about that.

Does the portal also indicate civilian prep schools?

How does your MOC use USAFA potential and status columns in your selection? Does it have any bearing?

During selection time a majority of the candidate's potential/status is listed as "undetermined" and therefore doesn't typically have an influence on the decision.

If a candidate is complete with her/her file and has a favorable potential rating, does that factor in?

@MOC5th - Now you stated someone having an LOE from WP helps the interviewer know what the academy is looking for. Does a candidate who received ROTC(any branch) on the first board help the interviewer come to a conclusion and get a better vision of the candidate? This question is open to anyone to answer.
