How the pass/fail grading option works at most universities

At most schools do they allow you to opt a course pass/fail if it is a required course for your major? Just curious to see if it differs from school to school...
 
Typically not. I teach at our flagship state university and I believe our policy is similar to most other colleges: You may not take a major course pass/fail, and you must earn at least a C-
 
I have two students at Colorado State University. Since COVID turned learning upside down (so starting for the Spring 2020 semester), they have been allowing students to choose not pass/fail, but instead satisfactory/unsatisfactory. In order to get an S, your actual grade must be at least a C. However, students are advised to look into specific major and scholarship requirements before choosing the S grade as some programs require an actual grade/GPA calculation. An S does not factor into a student’s GPA.
