Can someone help me understand what I need to do to apply for a VP Nomination?

I went to VP Biden's website a few weeks ago and it had a spot to upload 5 reference letters as PDF files. I had 5 people give me reference letters addressed to VP Biden and have the PDF files ready to go.

But, today the website seems different. Has a place for an essay, but no longer has a place to upload references.

Do I fill out the form on VP Biden's website? Do I send the 5 reference letters to each of the service academies?

Want to make sure I get it done but could use help understanding what I need to do, thanks!

deadline is in january. you are right. i just looked and the site is different - my son has been in the process of getting recommendations in the form of pdf files as well. there is no longer a section to up load recommendation letters anymore - just directions to mail it to the academys. so i guess we have the same question - how do you mail the recommendations for vp nomination? the academy already has the same recommendations which were sent in to support my sons application.

Link for the VP Application

Just finished submitting the forms for the Vice Presidential Nomination at

http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/vice-president-biden/academy-nominations/application

When I finished I got the following message...

Thank You for your application.
..Thank you for your Military Academy application. Results of this year's nomination process will be announced March of next year.

Best of luck,

The Military Academy Nomination Team

Still trying to understand what I need to do with the reference letters (some are the same as the ones I submitted to the USAFA and USNA, but not all).

Do A Print Screen of Your VP Nomination Page

BTW, the website does not offer you the opportunity to print a copy of what you submitted...(and I did not do a print screen for my records, have the essay but not the rest)...So save it yourself if you want it for your records.

Well, we scanned my daughter's, converted to PDF, then attached to the app before submitting. I thought that was what needed to be done--could be wrong.

areed, last year it was paper but just the application. All other info was to be sent to the SA's. This year I saw the new site which was self-data entry centric with recommendation letter upload areas and no way to print final results.

I see that they don't want the letters any more. I can imagine several thousand letters came at them all at once. :shake: and someone started to wonder why they asked for them. :frown: They're probably on the uphill side of a learning curve on this. They also don't specifically require five letter any more.

I would call the SA Admissions Office and inquire about sending additional letters of recommendation beyond what's been sent as part of the SA application. I suspect the SA's don't need those duplicated efforts. But let them decide.

Good luck on your application process! :thumb:

We had the same thing happen: first time my son went to the website, we saw the PDF file attachement spot; this changed a couple of weeks ago. The information at the bottom of the application gives directions to send the letters directly to the service academys and provides the address and to whose attention it should be sent.

i know that this thread is old but i tried to complete this form today and i kept getting the message 'Your reasons for wanting to attend one of the military academies is required and must be 3500 characters or less in length." my essay is exactly 3500 words (i have even tried cutting it down a few characters) and the form will not submit. anyone else have an issue with vp biden's automatic form?

Characters does not mean the same thing as words. If you have 3500 words then you probably have way to many characters for it to work correctly.

sorry, i meant "characters" and not "words." i even get "You have 1 characters left." on the form.

A separate question..
If i plan on attending the Service Academies class of 2016, is it too early for me to send in my application for a nomination by the Vice President?

No, but you might want to wait until your resume is filled out more. The applications are open from March 1 to January 31. Your senior year should provide you opportunities to demonstrate leadership and ACT/SAT scores which will improve your application.

Thanks!
Does the nomination from the vice president give you a higher chance of getting into the SA than getting one from a congressman or senators?

No. The competition for a VP nom is nationwide. your most likely source of a nomination is from your congressman. That being said, applying for the VP nom certainly won't hurt your chances so you should definitely do it.

Sorry I mis-read your question. The simple answer is "yes." this is because a vice presidential nom works differently than a congressional/senatorial nom.

The vice president doesn't choose who he nominates. in fact, he doesn't have anything to do with the process. what happens is his staff will compile all of the applicants and send them to the academies. the academies will then look at all of the applicants and find applicants they want but don't have congressional/senatorial noms. the academies will then tell the VP staff who they want and those people will be given nominations.
