Not going to lie, my app for this year wasn't the strongest. Got a nom, but med dq for a past injury. I still have faith, but I'm just looking ahead. I will apply as many times as needed, as I am fine with putting my head down, getting better, and being patient. So plan B goes as follows- Attend civ college, work toward Aerospace engineering degree, join afrotc, apply the following years as needed. I know that college GPA is huge, and that I will need to perform well in rotc. I also plan on starting PPL as soon as I know for a fact I will not be at USAFA next year. Are there any other things that I could do to make my app better? Taking on maybe say an, independent sport? I know that there are others out there in the same boat as me, and I just want to say hang in there, someone else in a small town in Pittsburgh is having the same worries as you. As for anyone who has been here before, any advice?

Improving your SAT and/ or ACT scores will probably be a big factor. You can also call your admissions counselor later in the year (if you do get denied) and she/he can tell you the notes they left on your application, it's good insight. As a reapplicant, they told me where I was weakest and improved on it. Also, you're not out until the TWE.

Make sure your freshman course schedule looks like a plebe’s. Typically that means calculus, chemistry, English, history. Make sure it’s all freshman-level classes or higher — no remedial stuff. Focus on a couple key extracurriculars and make a leadership impact — quality over quantity.

Your best bet if you are set on getting an appointment is enlisting. The Academy is even harder on college applicants because you are completing against all the 4.0 varsity athletes still- the hold an even higher standard for college applicants. When you apply as a prior you are only completing against other priors for a spot. If you enlist in the Guard you could receive education benefits and right after basic training apply again. If you can go to BMT as soon as possible, say after this quarter or semester then you will be in a really good position for next year. Even if you up your SAT / ACT, nothing will make you more likely to receiving an appointment than going the enlisted route in my opinion. After applying for years - straight from high school then after civilian prep finally what set me apart was enlisting. And if you want to go this route you should enlist in the Guard and not active duty because active will make you wait a year before you can reapply or you will have to apply for a waiver to apply within the first year. If you go Guard you could continue to go to school after BMT and tech school so its more flexible and you can reapply straight away.

Ensure your math and science professors know you and can write a solid recommendation/eval for you. So hit the office hours and be engaged in class.
