So our DS is out at sea for the first time. Don't know if he is using a flashdrive or external to back up his work. Hope he is. So I guess he needs to put his project on a good old fashioned CD? Or perhaps find another computer on which he can download his project? KP Techno people, please explain. We have no contact with our son. And I don't even know if HE knows of the new "rules of engagement". He still doesn't have a shipping email account and he's been out 3 wks:eek:

I'm not a techie...with that being said...Ensign put his 2nd seayear project on his external drive. He copied the project to CD and carried both back to school with him. He had both so he didn't have an issue...

Just sayin....:shake:

Similar situation here, KP2013Dramamama.
DS is at sea and unaware of anything going on at KP but he does call us when they are in a US port... sometimes!

I mentioned the new computer security rules at KP to him and he knew nothing. Also, he has no email on his ship, except for the Captain's. His response to the potential problem with the sea project was, "hey mom, my project is halfway finished, Can you believe it".
I took that to mean Chill, mom
So that is what I'm going to do !!!

As I understand it, Mids have additional rights on their computer, once they are 'released' for their sea terms. Just keep good backups REGULARLY to different things. Before they 'reconnect' back at KP and have their rights changed, they should copy stuff OFF of "unauthorized" media (portable HDDs, Thumbdrives, whatever) onto something they CAN import. (CD/DVD, etc).

DoIT is not going to reach thru the sky with an email that suddenly locks them out of their computer :)

Also, with the popularity (and portability) of Netbooks or secondary laptops... some mids are opting OUT of the wrestling match, and just using a second system. At the end, they just copy out a DVD and import documents back onto their good ol' KP laptop.

Regardless, keep on top of doing those sea projects !!! :)

Thanks every one for the information. Jessbee2013, you HEAR from your son! Lucky girl. No emails for us, :frown:but we do know where his ship is:smile: and figure no news is good news:wiggle:

Your students know how to back up their projects :) Stop worrying Mom.

The only time they will be shut off is when they sign onto the KP network.

My son bought his own laptop to take to sea so he would not have to worry about the issued one breaking down (and then having to worry about getting a replacement), etc. and so he could store on a flash drive as well. Just saying
