How will a government shutdown affect ROTC?

No one in my (AF) detachment has gotten their stipends yet.

Anyone else?

My son was told that there was a "malfunction" of sorts during the summer in regards to paying AF stipends and that he should probably expect to receive his first one the 15th of October. And also that is there is money to be paid in arrears that they would only pay half of what was owed each month. So if he was to be paid $300 for September and still hasn't received anything come October he would get $450 total ($300 for October and half of September) and then $450 total for November etc, etc..

Been starting to notice effects of the shutdown. Was talking to one of my friends in a different Battalion, and their FTX was cancelled due to it. Luckily for us, we had ours last Saturday. From what I heard, our HR is furloughed and (I think) the cadre civilian contractors too. Must stink for those undergoing contracting/DoDMERB qualifications.

I'm currently in the process of DoDMERB, and today when I tried to log into the site to check my status, it said that it had been ordered to be shut down while the government is shut down

Our ROTC Battalion is having a meeting tomorrow morning regarding the shut down...I'll let you guys know what they say for our battalion.

They shut our Battalion down. The last day to commission is spring 2015, which means as an MSII, I will either have to transfer or drop the program. I am very thankful I am not contracted so I will avoid any fees that I will need to pay. It is a sad day here for everybody :(

As for my plans I am dropping the program and finishing my undergraduate here at UWL. I am then planning to go to seminary and while at seminary do the summer Army program for Chaplains then when I finish seminary I will commission as an Army Chaplain hopefully.

Freedom - I am really sorry to hear that. I understand there are a total of 13 battalions that are closing. Best of luck to you.

They are closing a few schools throughout the nation, but they were doing that regardless of the shutdown.

Agreed, this decision was made independently of any shutdown.

What determines which programs will be shut down? Is it possible for large state-school battalions to be shut down?

DS is doing SMP. He got sworn in and got assigned to the guard unit he was wanting.

Drill was supposed to be this weekend. Got notice that drill was cancelled due to gov't shutdown and the weekends would be made up later.

That way the guardsmen can earn their pay and points needed towards retirement and promotions

Strength and Honor - it is of course possible for any battalion to be closed; as far as what rationale was used to determine the schools closed at this time I cannot say. If your battalion were affected you would have been told already.

Oh no, I'm a high school senior now. I'm just applying for the scholarship to large state schools (IU, Purdue) and SMCs (VMI), so I doubt those would be closed.

Freedom - my DS's battalion is as well, although he will get to finish and commission there. It is a sad day. Again, best of luck to you, and to all those affected.

Sorry to hear this is happening to your program.

What will happen to the Contracted, Scholarship, and SMP cadets at your school.

Are their any Battalions close by that these cadets can continue to participate in as a crosstown cadet.

Will these cadets be able to transfer to another school and take their scholarships with them.

Will cadets be able to finish out this year with the program, are any of the programs being shut down right away. The article says the shut down's will be complete during the 2014/2015 year. Does this mean that the programs will continue for this year.

What DSs battalion is being told, loosely paraphrased of course -

Current MSI and II are free to leave ROTC at no obligation or pursue a transfer to another school. If they have scholarships I believe they will be able to take them wherever they are accepted.

Current III and IV will be able to finish and commission. Class of 15 will be the last commissioning class.
