How will AFROTC funds be provided to my college?

I have received a type 1 AFROTC scholarship which will cover tuition and fees. The college I plan to attend provides a merit scholarship which can be used towards any fees including room and board meaning I have finances taken care of and won't need to go in debt.

My question is, will AFROTC pay for tuition at the beginning of the school year or will I have to pay out of pocket and then be reimbursed later on? I don't have 30K for tuition sitting around and neither do my parents, will I have to take out a loan until my AFROTC funds come through and reimburse? I would love to use the savings I have at the moment to pay for flight lessons or a used car before I graduate, is it possible to enter AFROTC without any significant savings?

Thanks for any help or tips you can provide!

They will not pay at the beginning of the semester, but later on. Units will normally provide a list of scholarship cadets to the college. Most colleges will defer payment requirements for the folks on that list. For the rare colleges that don't, folks normally take out a loan until they get reimbursed and then pay it off.

A call to your unit will confirm how it works at your college.

ok thank you. I will contact my future unit to check if payment can be deferred.

If not it seems like a shame to take out a loan and have to pay interest when I don’t truly need the money.

Contact the Bursar/Financial Aid Office at your school. Most schools allow deferring the payment awaiting Government payment as others indicated. They can also educate you on the timeline for repayment that results in no/little interest - 120 days rings a bell with me but that may just be for federally subsidized. Make sure you meet all the criteria to contract when you get to school so there is no delay that you can control.

With my two, we've always let the process run its course. The AFROTC payments were/are usually a little late and when I've called finance, they said not to worry because they knew what that ROTC would be paying. So I've stopped calling. :) But we sent the kids off and never asked for any deferment.
Are you positive that the merit money can go toward housing? Have you told the school that you also have ROTC? If not, you should. Some schools take away merit scholarships if outside scholarships are earned. It happened to my son at St. Louis U (though he did not end up going there and I've heard they've changed their position). If your merit scholarship can go to room and board, you may want to call finance and speak to them about making sure the scholarship money is slotted to go to room and board and not tuition so that they don't put it toward tuition when the funds reach your account before the ROTC funds do.
Congrats by the way!

Thank you for the response! Yes I have contacted their office of financial aid and informed them of my AFROTC scholarship, and they verified the merit scholarship could go towards any fees including room and board, and will be reduced only to not exceed the total costs. I will definitely make sure the scholarship is applied to room and board and not tuition. It is likely because it is a private school with a smaller amount of ROTC students.

I was pleasantly surprised as the three other schools I have applied to will only allow their scholarships to apply towards tuition. For two of them I have full tuition scholarships not associated with AFROTC, however are unwilling to let those funds go towards anything else. Not sure why since they would be in the same place financially...
